Quadrophenia's Immersion box set with 8 tracks of a double disc remastered in 5.1 (via DVD~Audio) was just NOT enough.
Then came the upcoming SHM~SACD remastered from the original analogue master tapes.

And now in August 2012, the Criterion Collection will release the film version of Quadrophenia with a Lossless 2.0 stereo track and a specially created 5.1 track in DTS Master Audio created with the direct supervision of the WHO.

But the conundrum is the soundtrack and the Who's original creation are two different entities so should one spring for the SHM~SACD in stereo or perhaps wait a bit longer until the 5.1 tracks are complete (if, ever) or spring for the Criterion restored version in 5.1

Or buy all three (SACD multi/SHM~SACD and/or The Criterion BD restored disc in PCM stereo/5.1 both lossless)?????????????????

Very unlikely to happen.

As a Who fan, you need all of them.

The movie is a classic also for non-Who fans. I hope Criterion manages to improve the picture quality, as the UK Blu-ray doesn't look great. I don't have a m-ch system, but the 5.1 soundtrack downmixed to stereo doesn't sound nearly as good as the album in stereo (the soundtrack uses different mixes and edits, made from the same studio recordings). More compressed, less upper treble and lower bass, as if mixed to fit the movie sound better.

Claude, rarely does Criterion disappoint in their blu~ray releases. I am sure with the Who's participation for the 5.1 mix, the best masters were utilized and Criterion usually transfers 24 bit from the master elements and sometimes even the original camera negative. At least it may render us an inkling of what to expect from a hiz rez SACD (or DVD~A) in 5.1 should that materialize (don't be a pessimist, Claude).

I just talked myself into pre~ordering the Criterion BD release.

As a long hair, classical music guy, I must admit I had my period of rock affinity during rock's Golden Age. And, I have to put The Who right up there with the Beatles as the very greatest of rock groups. I loved the Quadrophenia album in stereo, and still do. The movie was less satisfying in the DVD version, especially sonically. But, I still might be interested in a remastering. So, keep us posted and let us know how it is.

I just bought the SHM-SACD from CDJapan. I haven't received it yet, so I don't know how it sounds, but I'm looking forward to hearing the very best 2.1 version ever (hopefully!). If/when it comes out in 5.1 blu-ray, I'll probably get that too. I didn't buy the Immersion Box set, as it just seemed like a whole bunch of crap that I didn't need and only half the album in surround (WTF?!?)for a whole lot of money.

On August 28th, Criterion is releasing the BD of Quadrophenia in 5.1 DTS Master Audio derived from the original multichannel masters and the preliminary review for the disc from BluRay.com was extremely positive...........5 for the SQ (highest rating) and 4.5 for the video.

According to Criterion, the 5.1 DTS Master Audio track was mixed from FIRST generation analogue sources from the Who's vault

Count me in as the stereo SHM~SACD was extraordinary and at half the price............the BD should be awesome!

I got it today and the sound is fantastic. It was also a great pleasure to watch the movie again.

Quadrophenia is Pete's favourite Who album, i'm sure that every effort has been made to ensure that the sound in the Criterion BluRay is as good as possible...

Only owning 2 WHO albums, one on CD, the other on SACD, I was wondering, is it worth seeking out Baba O Riley in high res, presuming it exists?

FunkyMonke Baba O'Riley is on an expensive Japanese SHM-SACD The Who: Who's Next I have a computer 24/88.2 copy and it sounds excellent.
