I wanted to thank Polly Nomial for adding this recording to the database (as well as his other recent submissions). Any first impressions? I've been informed that my copy has been despatched and I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Beautiful sound (orch & Chandos) with good interpretations that don't perhaps displace the likes of Karajan in La Mer (for example) but it's very early listening days!

When you get a chance, listen to Toscanini's La Mer if you can, I've never heard a more glittering and atmospheric performance throughout and the Finale is an absolute roof-raiser.
...and I'm not a Toscanini fan-boy, BTW.
Regarding Haitink, I find his "Jeux" and "Nocturnes" and esp. the hothouse Faun Prelude the standouts.

I was just going to buy this SACD until I read on this websight that it was recorded in PCM 24/96. WHAT! Now Chandos is recording 5.0 surround SACDs in PCM 24bit/96kHz. Almost all of their previous SACDs have been recorded in DSD except for their first few back in the early 2000's. I remember they made such a big stink about changing to DSD instead of high resolution PCM. In fact I wrote them asking them why because at the time I thought HD PCM was better. They said that they felt DSD was better than PCM 24/96kHz. Then I heard one of their pure DSD SACDs and understood why they chose DSD. It's the ultra high high sampling frequency that makes the difference. What the freek is going on!!!!!! I want pure DSD! Come on Chandos!!! Why stop now?!?!

Ultrasonic DSD noise is in the format itself, all SACDs whither from DSD, PCM or analog masters have DSD noise as they have to be converted to DSD to be pressed as SACDs.
What Jeff is stating is his preference of SACDs that are actually recorded in DSD and Chandos is a big supporter of DSD recordings. So he should be able to ask why?

Two things,
one is your coloration friend " ultrasonic noise" that is very smooth(ing)especially for preamps.***
This is because all frequencies above 8khz are only sampled half the time,
firstly to reduce bits as was requested to the Sony team.(It was designed as an archive tool after all) Secondly it just sounded nicer in certain circumstances and gave them the opportunity for patents and more profits (he says cynically)
Try looking at waveforms of a near identical recording of a loud piano piece with a heavy right hand section.
|As for your Chandos comments as I buy nearlly ALL their sacds.
I suggest you look at the names on the disc/booklet who record the DSD.
Then look at the PCM 24/96 items they have been doing for many many years even before they issued sacds.Same names? ehm.......
***ie less switching with amplification stage.
