Thread: Any Magnepan owners here? Do your Maggies sound brighter with SACD material?

Over the weekend I moved my Magnepan 3.5s back into my primary audio system. This was the first time that I was able to listen to my Maggies with SACD source material. I have always loved Magnepan speakers, favoring them over all other speakers that I've owned or that my friends have owned, including: Martin Logan CLS, Martin Logan Aeon, B&W Matrix 802, Bozak Concerto, Dahlquist DQ-20, Thiel CS-3.5, among others. I have never found the Maggies to be too bright. However, now that I finally have them hooked up to my new SACD player, I am finding that the Maggies are too bright. Have other Magnepan owners experienced this? If so, what have you done to reign in the Maggies' high end?

No. I have 3.7s and they sound great with all source material. These are my first Maggie's - never liked them before, found them colored, substituting warmth for accuracy and detail. The 3.7s are something special. They are just a tad bass shy but otherwise fantastic speakers. I listen to SACD, vinyl, open reel tapes and (sometimes) RBCDs.

I have a pair of MG1.7s at the front, with the Magneplanar centre and rear set. I too have had MGs for many years, and upgraded to the 1.7s last year. The treble end is highly detailed, but no signs of overbright balance, especially using the Audyssey room correction and plenty of space behind the speakers, as they are bipolar.

Don't have this problem - but getting some (more?) distance between the back of the speaker and the wall may help. Some acoustic damping on that wall may help as well. The distance to the side wall may contribute somehow also.

Are they not dipoles 'though so wall reflections are critically important. Surely, no damping there?

dipolar? I think they work OK.

Magnepans or Magneplanars are Dipoles not Bipoles.

If your dipole speakers are bright, absorptive material on the wall behind the speakers will help tame, or completely cure that brightness. Don't overdo it though.

Note: Dipoles vibrate back and forth while Bipoles require two drivers or one that expands and contracts so that the back wave is in phase with the front wave.

Dipoles produce an out of phase backwave.

How has the conclusion been drawn that it is the sacd material making speakers sound bright? More likely other factors like room, amp, etc!

Or, maybe the SACD player? The design and quality of the analogue electronics of the player are (very) important to the sound quality. Not all players are created equal.
