Hello, I am looking for some info on correctly hooking up a SonyDVP-NC685V to a Harman Kardon AVR 120 (HK). I understand that the SACD does not use optical but requires analog. My HK has 5.1 output, but does not have 5.1 input found on many new recievers. So, I have the Sony's analog L/R out to my HK CD L/R in.

Without replacing the HK, is there another way to utilize my 5.1 speakers with the Sony for SACD output? (maybe an A/B switch?) Although I still want to use HK for DVD output.

Link to HR Specs: http://www.harmankardon.com/specifications.asp?cat=REC&ser=&prod=AVR%20120&sType=H

Thanks for any info.

Bryzmon,
Am I understanding this correctly: there are 6 outputs to speakers, but 4 of the input channels are digital-only? Well, you could add four 40-watt amplifiers for the additional channels! ...Or perhaps have the unit modified so that the other HK amp circuits are accessible from the back panel (bypassing the digital converters). It might be cheaper and easier to upgrade...

Well, after a visit to the electronics store this morning, I think I have answered my own question. In order to fully enjoy multi channel SACD, I need to have a receiver that has 6 channel in (5.1), I have been told that DVD-A is the same although I only have SACD.

I'm not sure to understand ??

The info I had is that you can'y use the digital in or coax in to plus the SACD and have the multichannel sound.

Now you're saying that some new AVR are on the market with 6 annalog in to support the SACD ??

I still don't understand why the digital in can't support the SACD multi channel; that's the way that use the DVD to provide the movies in multi channel mode.

Worse than that, if you have a musical DVD for example the new Stones it will be in a multi channel mode ???? via the digital in

The AVR-120 doesn't have analog 5.1 input, the newer models (AVR-125, AVR-130) do have them (I have AVR125). So you're right, you won't be able to listen to multichannel SACD or DVD-Audio with that receiver..stereo will be fine though.
The digital inputs cannot be used for SACD/DVD-Audio on ANY receiver, simply because the DVD-player will downsample to 44Khz/16 bit on its digital outputs. (I think it's because they were afraid of piracy of the high-res format through the digital outputs or something like that). DTS and Dolby-Digital are 44Khz/16 bit formats I believe.

For bryzmon and Ross.......

Even if the player in question did output a digital signal via the optical or coaxial digital output, your receiver wouldn't know what to do with the signal.

when you speak of surround formats for DVD movies like Dolby and DTS, don't forget they aren't in anyway related to SACD's DSD signal. But that's all a moot point as DSD is only passed with an iLink cable (IEEE)

So the short version answer here is NO. You can't listen to the full 5.1 channel sound of SACD on an older receiver without 5.1 analog inputs.

To enjoy the SACD format with a SINGLE digital cable, you need both a PLAYER and a RECEIVER with the appropriate iLink input on the receiver and iLink output on the player.
