Hi

My wife and I are leaving for Montreal on Friday and we are going to see Hilary Hahn with the Montreal Symphony.

I was just wondering if anyone knows what the SACD Scene is like in that area? Is there any shops that specialize and carry lots of Classic Music on SACD?

My worry is that it may be hard to track down good shops for SACD or that there will be very little selection.

There appears to be a pretty good scene there for vinyl. How about the SACD market? Anyone have any info on that?

I was in Montreal 6 years ago and there were a couple of CD shops I went to then then (HMV comes to mind). NOt sure about an abundance of SACDs though.

Enjoy your trip. I love visiting Montreal and one of my favorite things to do is browse through the music stores. It's such a treat to find stores that actually carry music and movies. We don't have any stores like this in the Boston area any longer. I recommend that you check out the big Archambault store at 500 St. Catherine St. on the edge of the Gay Village across the street from the UQAM/Berri subway stop. It has three floors with DVD/jazz/international in the basement and pop on the first floor and classical on the 2nd floor. You really need to watch the prices. You can find some fantastic bargains, but you'll also find that the prices on many discs are astronomically higher than you would pay here. I can't speak specifically to what sacd's they carry. But even if you don't buy anything it's fun just to be able to browse.

There is also a big HMV at 1020 St. Catherine in the middle of the shopping district.

The Place des Arts where the new concert hall is located is on St. Catherine in between the locations of the two stores, but closer to HMV.

Thanks for the heads up... do they still have a whole floor of Classical at the Archambault? There was also a whole grigorian store there a few years back but they closed. This will be my first time in Montreal so I am very excited to find some great classical music on SACD there.

It's been a year since I was last there and if I remember correctly they had made some reduction in the amount of space given to classical recordings. It's still a sizable department and worth a visit. Besides recorded music and movies I believe they also sell instruments and sheet music.

Or in Alabammy with a banjo on your knee.........

Nagraboy, shouldn't you be shopping for a 7.2 pre/pro instead of quoting Shakesp....er Dylan? BTW, Blonde on Blonde sounds splendid in 5.1 !
