Discussion: Timeline

When the recent Timeline flopbuster was in its final stages of production, it already had a score. One by Jerry Goldsmith. Richard Donner had asked Goldsmith for a particular kind of score, and when Goldsmith delivered, Donner decided he wanted something else.
With Goldsmith busy on other projects, with a deadline coming about, and with Goldsmith probably not in a mood to rescore the Timeline turkey, Donner and the producers turned to up and coming composer Brian Tyler to provide the score.

Now, the Varese Sarabande Records label is announcing on its website that it will be releasing Jerry Goldsmith's rejected Timeline score on a hybrid SACD.

The label already has Star Trek: Nemesis - Original Soundtrack by the same composer on SACD.

I'm very excited about this news. I've been a fan of Goldsmith since 1980, and I haven't regretted it. Of late, his music has become somewhat cookie-cutter, but I'm happy to see that his music will be represented on at least 5 SACDs that I know of:
1) Nemesis
2) Goldsmith orchestral compilation
3) Epics
4) Timeline
5) Goldsmith score compilation.

I have read that the Goldsmith TIMELINE was written more like an epic orchestral score, and then the producers decided they needed a more action-oriented score. But this is all hearsay.

(I don't think there's any other film score composer represented with this many SACDs.)

It's not hearsay. :) Richard Donner gave this interview to Music From the Movies:
http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/article.asp?newsmonth=1%2F12%2F2003&ID=208

In which he says "I wanted to stay away from action scoring and just wanted it to be a very strong orchestral piece that would carry the film. Jerry understood it totally. Little by little he played it to us, I loved it, it was just great. Then I laid it up to the picture for the first time and I realised that I had really screwed up, that I was really hurting the picture. What I really needed was a lot of drive, a lot of action, and a lot of music that keeps you on the edge of your seat."

I bought "Nemesis" on SACD and thought the sound absolutely stunning but the music a little too fragmentary, although certainly not without interest. I have the composer's LSO/Telarc filmscores SACD too and that's excellent in every way.

I am thrilled to report that the Timeline SACD was released yesterday via mail order only, as a single-inventory SACD.

I was further thrilled that they also released "The Great Train Robbery: Deluxe Edition", also as a single-inventory SACD. I have two copies of this on vinyl, and they have been played many times!

It's a great day for late composer, whose music I truly cherish. I'll be posting reviews as soon as I receive my copies.

I have in my grubby little hands, FINALLY, these two SACDs: Timeline and Great Train Robbery -- the latter being one of my favorite Goldsmith scores.

GTR sounds great so far, and I'll be posting reviews of each asap.

My goodness, TIMELINE is one of Goldsmith's BEST MUSIC in years!! And I am not exaggerating! Whoever made the decision to ax this glorious score should be SHOT! How sad it must have been that this was his last project, and it was rejected.

That it was rejected is sad. That it was replaced by pointless & derivative noise makes it much worse.

In any case, many thanks to Varèse Sarabande for releasing Goldsmith's score.
