Music producers and engineers rely heavily on high-end and professional headphones for critical monitoring, partly because of their revealing nature. And so do many SA-CD.net members for their personal listening. As to the VSE modded XA5400ES, you haven't the faintest idea of its potential. Instead, you should really stick to your voodoo audio-stones and digital shoe-polish.

BTW, I actually travel Business. But then again, I wonder if you can grasp the concept of an analogy...

BS.........Amaldo..........

You are a metaphor for the bougeousie!

BTW, Amaldo, you should practice walking with a Shakti Stone on your head-----will improve your equilibrium.

The bottom line is that these recordings range from 40 to 50 years old. Expecting them to sound as good as modern recordings is just ridiculous. And I suspect that many sound as good, if not better, than the RCA Living Stereo and MLP SACDs, which IMHO, were overrated when it came to their sonic values.

People should be buying these recordings because they're great performances -- ones that have stood the test of time. If all you care about is sound quality, then yeah, you'll probably be disappointed.

I avoid making sweeping generalizations about one SACD reissue project versus another, but the current EMI reissues are definitely quite comparable in sound quality to the Living Stereo and MLP reissues. Each series has its own character and the EMI tends to be very organic and intimate sounding.

Modern recordings may have greater sonic fidelity but that does not always translate to a more enjoyable sound. It's all case by case. Plenty of vintage recordings, when remastered properly and played back on good equipment, sound better than a lot of recordings made in the last 30 years.

To put it in a way that even you can understand, let's just say that I travel first-class and you travel cargo.

Too bad only you're stuck inside that little single-seater Cessna of yours. Not fun, but if you have no comparison point, you get used to it and may even think it's amazing.

Meanwhile, I'm high-altitude cruising, sitting in the sweet spot in my custom-made B747, so you can have all those extra little toys they give to kids to distract them so they won't start complaining about the flight.

Polarius T and Arnaldo..........we know you're both flighty..............

But what I want to know is who is the Pilot and who is the co~pilot?

At least you both get to wear headphones..............

rammiepie, his name is Ar-nal-do not A-mal-do. I too confuse 'rn' for 'm' sometimes.

A heads-up for forumites in NYC. J&R just got the Signature Collection SACDs in, priced at $8 per disc in the set (minus one cent), so 2-discs are $17.99, and 3-discs are $25.99. For whatever reason, I recall that the 4-discs are $35.99.

J&R is also having a promotion through 5/13 whereby all CDs are 20% off. Accordingly, I just picked up a number of the 2-disc sets for $14.39 and the 3-disc sets for $20.79.

Still debating springing on the Gieseking Debussy (how much better than the CDs could it be?) and the De Stefano (not a big fan, but at this price, might get it anyway).

I just listened to the Klemperer Mozart set and I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. I have these recordings in both their previous Redbook editions from 1989 and 2000. Both of those releases are better than the sound on these new SACDs. I think these recordings actually had much more natural dynamic range than the Living Stereo recordings from the same era. They are really smashing performances too but I think that the 2000 era Klemperer legacy Redbook releases are much better. I looked on the Mozart discs from that series to see who remastered them. The answer: Simon Gibson. I wonder what went wrong. I think the RCA and Philips material that has been remastered for SACD sounds fantastic. Maybe EMI should adopt their remastering strategy. Otherwise I don't see much point to this project.
There are a lot of EMI recordings I would love to have on SACD, Giulini's classic Figaro above all, but not like this. I would even rather have the 24 bit remasters from the earlier Klemperer Legacy edition on SACD. I am going to listen to the Mendelssohn/Schumann set next. Hope it is better.

The Debussy discs contain the richest mono sound I've ever encountered -- a sound which conveys depth and a modest illusion of breadth. (And costs less than dinner for two.)

I didn't even realise they were mono, wonderful sound.
