I wonder how the Tommy SHM-SACD will compare to the OOP multichannel SACD from the early 2000s...

If you are interested in multichannel, I would opt for the older release as it was mastered from Pete Townsend's personal multichannel tapes and sounds absolutely superb! Try to locate a copy (bargain bins, etc.) as it is worth seeking out.

Rammiepie both the Tommy SACD and DVD-Audio sets are in stock and can be had for $23.92 and $21.77 respectively directly from Amazon.com

Only the DVD-Audio offers the video interview with Pete Townshend who shows us around his studio. He put a work tape on his Revox and recorded it to his computer and showed as how easy it was to edit and all the options available. A work tape is his recording of the music played by him of a new song he wrote that he would play for the Who so they could learn the song.

Pete Townshend mentioned how durable analog Reel to Reel was and how perfect this 30-year-old work tape sounded. He also told us his hard-drive crashed and that many in the music business were backing up their work to analog Reel to Reel as a safety even for digital recordings. I found that very interesting.

His Revox Reel to Reel was a real beauty.

Teresa, no contradiction to your love of stereo.....but the multichannel version on SACD is absolutely "perfect" as Townsend and company expand the soundstage and it sounds as though one is in the actual recording studio as the album was being created.

Myself and I know a lot of others would love to see the same care and attention lavished on Quadrophenia as the EP version of only 8 tracks mixed for surround in lossy codecs was one of the major disappointments of 2011. But as we all know, Townsend's hearing is shot and his heart is not in something that he cannot fully appreciate.

BTW, I own the disc version of Tommy, the Reel to Reel version, the DVD~A version and the SACD (which is by far the best version). The Reel to Reel was pre~dolby and was marred with excessive hiss which I'm sure would be alleviated with today's super duper reel to reel players.

Decca had one of the best recording teams well into the digital age. The 1980s recordings of Dutoit or Haitink (especially the Concertgebouw recordings) are limited by early digital resolution, but sound glorious nevertheless. Of course there is no point reissuing them on SACD.

I didn't use to care for DDD recordings. But the newly remastered RBCD versions of Daphne et Chloe (Dutoit) and Firebird (Dorati) in the Decca Sound box, both DDD, greatly impressed me. The dynamics of Firebird in particular is among the best of any disc I've heard.

Speaking of Decca gems....

Just stumbled across the Gerhardt/Wilkinson "Reader's Digest Festival of Great Classical Music," a 12 record set with the Royal Philharmonic and some pretty big names and two audiophile fav's: the Barbirolli Sibelius 2 and the Danon Stravinsky Petrushka. RCA hired the Decca team for these recordings and they are **stunning**. Reiner appears for a Brahms 4th, Kempe turns in Strauss' Don Juan and a Respighi "Pines," Horenstein takes Wagner, Wild appears for Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, (best, silkiest strings I've ever heard captured in the opening of the Tchaikovsky PC).

There's definitely life after the RCA and Mercury mines collapsed. I'd hound companies to re-release this lonely, overshadowed set which quietly blows away the usual audiophile suspects. Chesky mined these recordings for good reason, but on Lp.

Tragic. Would really love to hear the SHM-SACD version.
