Wand can be confusing, so many recordings caught on the fly, with the same orchestra and distributed through different companies. HM, DHM and RCA.
I'm a big fan of Wand's NDR Brahms 3rd, but the one recorded in the early digital days, around (gasp) '81? . I obsess over the 3rd and know of no more gorgeous 2nd mov't on record. The sound is surprisingly good, distant and warm. I listen on the Lp for added "air."
But here we have another cycle from mid-90's? Interesting. I suppose the point of this release is the yield of a little bit more resolution?

I think Wand is a highly over-rated Kappelmeister. Pretty much everything I've heard from him is mediocre at best. There - I said it.

Quite alright.
But when he's on, he's on. His '81-ish Brahm's 3rd as mentioned, and his digital DHM/RCA issue of Bruckner's 8th in Lubeck Cathedral, (not to be confused with the earlier analog HM). Flabby outer mov'ts, but the most rarefied and glorious slow mov't I've ever heard, that would include his earlier and later tries.

"Highly over-rated Kapellmeister"? Wow, three insults in a sentence. Not very fair, is it?

How does this cycle compare with the one Wand did with the NDR SO in the early '80s, and issued by RCA/BMG as a set in 1989? I have that one, and they're solid performances.

http://magazin.klassik.com/reviews/reviews.cfm?TASK=review&REID=890 (German) The review slightly implies that the second cycle is preferable to the old one.

My friend said that the 3rd is one of the best but the 4th is rather faceless.
