I'm stuck with an early '90s DG RBCD reissue-- bright, glassy, and a pretty good demonstration of the limitations of PCM in conveying piano sonority.

Plus, it sounds as if they used a stereo mic in the Mid-Side format--probably a Neumann SM-69, which offers a less spacious image of the piano compared to the Sonodore omnidirectional mics that they used on Ish-Hurwitz's recordings. I guess there's nothing left to do but by his set! :-)

I'm sold! Maybe Leschenko's recording of the Liszt Sonata, too....

I have come across another spectacular Liszt disc called "Visions" performed by Martin Berkofsky.
Wonderful playing and spectacular sonics. Plus, its not the usual Liszt repetoire (B-minor Sonata not included on this disc).
I absolutely love it.

I enjoy this, too. His extremely slow tempos took some getting used to, but I love the grandeur and sweep he produces. The sound is stunning.

Before I pull the trigger I would like to hear a bit more comments on the performance of Harmonies du soir by Berkofsky, this is one of my all time favorites from Liszt, in a way it is a mini B-minor sonata, starts with a whisper and ends with a whisper but it has an explosive middle section.
My favorite recording is a 1995 performance by Evgeny Kissin, he as 24 at that time, just a kid, but what a firestorm in his hands. Kissin has slowed down considerably in his recent performances.

Thanks, generally speaking it is next to impossible to judge audio quality from these short samples but this one clearly comes through my crappy computer speakers, no doubt it is a great recording. I just ordered it.

The audio is superb--just be prepared for slow tempos!

I think it will be difficult to find a more satisfying recording than Berkofsy's. I highly recommend it. Incomparable.
