Some interesting notes on the recent WYWH SACD release including

"I will be doing a 5.1 mix of The Wall for release on SACD, but we don't have a planned release date for that yet" - James Guthrie

interesting comment about the Rush Moving Pictures on BD as well...really wished that had been released on SACD.

There is an interesting article available discussing Andy VanDette's recent remastering of Rush' Mercury catalog (The Sector Boxes) and the problems with using some of the master tapes.

Like Doug Sax and others with Pink Floyd, he too found that the original master tapes for some albums were not always the best source for the remastering. Some of the more recent albums were actually in worse shape than the older ones. He wound up using 96/24 digital copies in the band's archive that may have been made in the late 1990's.

After reading these articles, I wonder whether previous remastering efforts are not to be considered superior (at least for CD) because of the fact that the mastering engineer had access to the tapes when they were in better condition (or a less state of deterioration) than today. Even the best technology can't salvage sound that is no longer there. I'm thinking here of the MFSL editions of some of the Floyd albums.

Any thoughts?

After reading the article, I really feel for James Guthrie who literally has to not only bake the tapes and re-splice them but work with irreplaceable multi~track masters to extract the last drop of audio from the WALL analogue tapes........of course, a two disc set, as well. Never realized that the synthetic glue used to replace the previous whale oil formula did irreparable damage to the magnetic oxide....and that NOBODY knew this change had transpired. Thankfully, it was only for a brief period.

So, don't expect the WALL on SACD for a long, long time but Chad Kassem did say that he is seeking to release all PF at some juncture in multi~ channel SACDs..........which, based on WYWH, is phenomenal news, indeed.

But at least we know we ARE getting remastered from the Original Analogue Tape SACDs and truth in advertising is mighty important these days.

The wait won't be as long as the wait for WYWH. And I think we can all say it was well worth it.

Slightly different note, I had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday and as a present for the holidays and recovery present my mother got me WYWH on the new 180g vinyl. I'm anxious to compare it to the stereo SACD layer.

I think there will be a few more multichannel SACDs released in the coming year........and it couldn't come at a better time.

The Wall has always been a multchannel wish for myself, as well. A very dynamic album which is ideal for that format.

And sales of the Wall should go through the roof!

!S

One should be careful to mention vinyl in this forum. A firing squad is standing by to put us Vinyl buyers out of our misery.

Just a piece of advice mattman. BTW the vinyl sounds nice..

Wouldn't mind The Wall, Animals, Meddle, and even A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Wall and Momentary in 5.1 to the max...id take the rest in 2 ch and 5.1 "light" (ie. 5.1 format for music that wasn't meant to be surround...in order to fill in space, so a light, not too aggrenossive 5.1 mix)
