Great programming! Two masterpieces plus one that's at the very least intriguing (haven't heard it myself).

Looking forward,

PT

Shame about the SACD duplication of the Brahms though (on Pentatone RQR), - would have preferred something more contemporaneous with the Ligeti as a coupling.

Great news. I have never heard this rarely performed Brahms Trio in its entirety, but I heard it used as a theme on Bill McLaughlin's Center Stage from Wolf Trap on PBS radio. It is brilliant music from what I heard. So, I had been hoping for an SACD release of it, and here it is!

Yep, looks like a great release.

It's actually triplication: Horn Trios - Baborak, Nasturica, Shimizu

Baborak is BPO's former horn principal, and while he's really very good, I think this is going to be the disc to be had, at the very least programmingwise and sonically.

And most likely musically, too: Neunecker is the dedicatee of Ligeti's "Hamburg Concerto" and you can check her out on the Teldec Ligeti Edition for which she also recorded the Horn Trio (with Aimard and Gawriloff). Can't wait for this first-rate release.

But I have. The third piece is "Solo X" by Kalevi Aho, specially written for this recording.
A fiendishly difficult but sensational piece written by Finland's leading composer, played by a mistress (feminine form of master??)

Just listened to this -- what a phenomenal release! Just tops in every category: virtuosity and expressiveness of the individual players (very important here, both of these), ensemble sensitivity and balance, recording quality, and programming. I've never listened to the Brahms and the Ligeti with such great pleasure before, and the Aho work is much more than merely an interesting filler. While the pianist Silke Avenaar is not quite an Aimard in the Ligeti piece (the Aimard of the Sony Ligeti Edition, vol. 7, not of the earlier Erato recording), just about no one else is, either, and the overall impression is nonetheless that of a more free and spontaneous-sounding (but no less internalized or controlled) performance, qualities that matter in Ligeti (who was a big admirer of Bill Evans and a certain T.S. Monk by the way). And in the Brahms trio she really shines as an ideal interpreter of the composer, showing certain qualities that made me even think of Richter as a chamber musician. Neunecker needs no compliments as she might well be the greatest proponent of her instrument (or any individual instrument) right now, and Weithaas on the violin really caught my attention. Must look up more samples of her work.

An experience little short of thrilling, in other words, and for me the best I've heard from BIS to date. Don't miss out on this.

Their Brahms in particular makes Brahms: Violin Sonata No. 1, Horn Trio - Trio Grumiaux sound just ancient, awkward, and unrefined, and Horn Trios - Baborak, Nasturica, Shimizu a bit pedantic, scripted, and un-together in comparison (to say nothing of BIS' hallmark sonics which are outstanding and in their own class here).

Why isn't anyone reviewing this (Polly ahoy!)? It's a standout, a big highlight for me from the recent years. Rarely (let's be honest) you get to hear SACDs that compete with the existing catalog in also artistic terms, not just sonic ones, and here you get a bunch of really the finest musicians of our time perfectly syncing, playing music that's infinitely rich, oh so very lovely, and -- dare we ask more -- excitingly cutting edge.

I don't like Weithaas' tone production. Her tone becomes scrappy at times. I don't know why she, instead of Daniel Sepec, is the 1st violinist in Arcanto Quartett.
