Hi all,

New to the board, life-long music lover. For those interested, you can see my set-up in my profile. I'm glad to see there are folks as thrilled with SACD as I am, though I wish there were more so the labels would get more of their back catalogs to market.

I have two questions: first, have any of you heard, in person, any current players with marked improvement over the SCD-1? I'll be honest, I stopped looking when I got mine, but wonder if others have improved substantially over my little tank.

The second question is regarding titles: has anyone released "Danse Macabre" on SACD? I listen almost only to (non-smooth) jazz but picked just up a two-disc SACD set, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra "Voyage", which really perked my interest in classical music. Other titles from my very limited experience which I would enjoy would be Holst "The Planets", though which has the best performance of the three or four I've seen I have no idea, "Hungarian Rhapsody", and Beethoven and Mozart. From the last two composers I am probably familiar with a bit of their work though not by name, I suppose, beyond the most recognizable works. I also recently heard an amazing cello piece but have absolutely no idea who wrote the piecce nor who performed it. I can say, though, that based on my response to the piece I would be very interested in cello works. Do you have any recommendations?

It appears that famous jazz re-releases in SACD are going to be slow and infrequent so I thought it might be a good time to educate myself with regards to classical music. Thanks.

Paul,

Check out aplhifi.com and go to the forum. I just received my APL Denon 3910 on the 22nd and I have barely slept since. The "man" completely rebuilds the unit while keeping the chassis, transport, and DSP. After reading through some forum threads, you will be most curious. All I can say is, this player is for real. As an aside, Alex worked for Sony for 8 years and is very aware of your unit. He claims to trounce it :-)

The Accuphase DP-100 transport is based on the SCD-1 (i think), it has a seperate converter (DC-101) or can be used with a digital pre-amp (DC-330) of similar quality. This should shurely be an improovement over the SCD-1.

For "The Planets" i would suggest Gardiner,

Beethoven: the Karajan cycle, Vänska with symhonies 4 & 5

Mozart: Piano concertos and sonatas with Brendel, youth symphonies with Marriner, all the symhonies on Brilliant Classics, Nozze di Figaro with Jacobs, horn concertos civil

Cello: Jojo Ma "Solo", Bach sonatas Starker

(can give further suggestions if you also like cello & piano or cello & orchestra.)

Hi Paul,

As far as I know, the only version of "Danse macabre" available on SACD is the one recorded bu the Chicago Symphony Orchestra directed by Barenboim on Deutsche Gramophone. available on import only. You will find more information on this site. Here's the link:

Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3, etc. - Barenboim

Good day and good listening!

Thank you very much, folks. The hardware gives me something to look at and the disc suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks!

There is some controversary about this (understatement) but I believe that mutlichannel is a huge improvement over 2 channel, all other things being equal. Wait - I even believe you can get a benefit with a multichannel system using speakers that cost less per unit. Since the SCD-1 is two-channel only, there are going to be lots of players with higher performance, if you buy into what I have said.
