Just to keep you up to speed. This is again a Stereo only SACD.
It is the much acclaimed 2005 recording, the second that Rattle has recorded with the BPO. The original RBCD was widely praised for it's unusually wide dynamic range and the sheer brilliance of the playing.
This SACD version has enhanced the quality of the sound in every respect and is a welcome addition to the catalogue. It is an imaginative release by EMI and they have done a fine job in improving what was an outstanding disc in it's own right.
Pricey 'though but one for all serious collector's if the piggy bank runs that far

Am I the only one who finds it odd that recordings from this once-great British recording company now cost so much here in Britain?
Thanks to globalisation...
Maybe we should send in the gunboats and demand reasonably priced SACDs in exchange for - say - opium.
After all, this worked pretty well in Hong Kong.

That's because you Brits didn't invent SACD and didn't build SACD factories, and you sold that once great recording company to a US bank ;-)
You can have the recording for £5 on the Amazon Marketplace, on CD. Compared to CD, the SACD is pricey in Japan too.

As we do!
Anything not nailed to the floor over here will be flogged off to the highest bidder, now the Chinese and Indians are in on the act. HM Queen still belongs to us... I think... although maybe our cousins from Oz will be making a bid soon?
We do have two recording companies still in the SACD game, Chandos & LSO Live (who also cater for Mariinsky) but the discs are churned out over in Austria.

2) BTW, the Aussies are welcome to her and her whole family...
3) Linn??!! I know some folk reckon Glasgow is in a different universe altogether, but it was still nominally part of the UK the last time I looked!*

Can't deny any of that, especially as I am on record in this Forum bemoaning the fate of EMI (and Decca) once they were sold to faceless transatlantic corporate apparatchiks.
Just one of the few minor annoyances that banks have been responsible for lately...
BTW, the Dutch half invented SACD, and we normally regard them as almost honorary Brits! And, as we all know, the Japanese hardly ever invent anything, they just commercialise and refine - damn well, too!
We all have our place...

I don't see why you're blaming globalization.
It's thanks to globalization that there is a worldwide market place available to purchase this SACD. If this was the 1980s, the only way to buy this disc would be to fly to Japan, or have a friend in Japan buy them for you and mail them.
As many other people have noted, these discs are intended for the Japanese market (that is, being stereo only and the premium price). Given that no one else is releasing these recordings on SACD at a lower price, there is no reason for the Japanese market to adjust its price.
If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at EMI in the USA and Europe for ignoring the SACD format.
