It's safe to assume that Queen's classic albums from the 70s were original analog recordings. Back then, 44.1 kHz/16 Bit PCM was just a (bad) Sony dream...

I've spent some time without much success trying to discover when the first vinyl discs were digitally recorded before conversion to analogue. I remember it was in the seventies probably around '77/'78? Do you happen to know?

First Queen discs go back to '73 so maybe some hope there as you suggest.

I have everything Queen did on CD but surely none of it was recorded in anything but RB 44/16 so difficult to see how it could be made better.

Well... I have also every CD and LP and DVD and Bluray and DVD audio of Queen...all past remasters didn't gave me the feeling of these SHM-SACDs...
The only way to know if it's true is to try it!... and they'll sure became a very rare collector's item so... won't be money wasted... I recommend them to every real Queen collector (with money to spend of course....)

The pop (and jazz) recording world was much slower in adopting digital technology than classical. Up to the mid to late 80's, the vast majority of pop albums were still recorded analogue.

This has something to do with the early limitations of digital multitrack recording/mixing, the fact that many studios were small and couldn't invest that much into expensive digital recorders, and that they didn't care about sound quality and audio innovation as much as classical recording teams (back then 16/44 PCM was considered superior to analogue by most people).

The first digitallly recorded pop album is said to be Ry Cooder's "Bop till you drop" from 1979. Donald Fagen "The Nightfly" was recorded digitally in 1982, and this was still considered highly innovative back then. The pop mainstream only followed a couple of years later.

Other early ones that come to mind are Abba's 'The Visitors' (1981) and Joe Jackson's 'Body & Soul' (1982?). Also see /showthread/47910

Hi Arnaldo,

All of Queen's 70's albums were analogue recordings indeed, the early 80's albums too.

The last album that was recorded that way was The Works. From A Kind of Magic to Made in Heaven, all of their albums were digitally recorded, 44.1KHz/16bits.

So I have seen...

... and I read this fatal information on Tuesday, Xmas day, the day right before the release ... what a despair.

Do not know whether this is simply postponed or totally thrown into oblivion ?

It's been postponed over and over. For the past six months or so, every month these two titles would show up in the release roster for the next month.

Someone on this forum (I do not remember who, nor the thread) posted a link to a page where the entire remastering of the "A Night at the Opera Album" was reported by a music journalist.

I just cannot fdind it back, nor do I succeed in googling it.

Help please ?
