This is in response to Michi's current review on this site of the SHM~SACD version:
Michi, what type of SACD player did you audition this album on? I was going to buy this album because of all the glowing reviews of the remastered RBCD and Import RBCD on Amazon (sonics, included) and having already purchased the SHM~SACD of Love You Live (it really sounded wonderful on my Marantz SA 112s) this seemed like a no~brainer.
Technically, it was "supposedly" remastered DSD from the UK analogue originals (in 2011).
Also want to pre~order the upcoming SHM~SACD of "Exile On Main Street" as I passed up the newly remastered RBCD of this title thinking in the back of my head that it would eventually be reissued in SHM~SACD (for once, I was right). Now, that particular album was NEVER an audiophile delight as it was recorded via a mobile truck parked outside a villa the Stones were staying in in the South of France.
The current prices from CDJapan of all SHM~SACDs is $56+.........so I don't think I'll be taking the plunge on this title especially considering your absolute pan of the sonics!

XA5400ES and XA9000ES. I tried it on my BDP95 as well. I'm going to bring it down to the SA Center's system (we have a Playback Designs there) and give it another chance. I'll let you know. I was really underwhelmed.
Though YMMV, and maybe I was just having a bad listening day, however... maybe the tapes were just in bad shape at this point. I had higher hopes for it.
That said, a lot of the other Stones discs surprised me the other way, (positively.) I'm still willing to put it down for a bit, forget about it, and give it another go and see if I change my mind.
I will be ordering "Exile.." and I'll let you know.

Michi, am anxious to hear how the Playback Design resolves this particular album. Should up the ante, considerably, IMO.
The only SHM~SACD I was disappointed in (and I have 21) was the Velvet Underground w/Nico disc. There was inherent distortion in the original recording which is somewhat jarring.
An outstanding SHM~SACD, both musically and sonically was the Style Council's "Cafe Bleu."
BTW, is the SACD Center's Playback Design player "stacked" for multichannel playback?
