I just got around to listening to this. The Symphony #5 is perhaps the finest recording I have heard to date. The MCH sound expands outward and UPWARD (don't ask me how) during forte passages with brass. This phenomenon is typical of what I hear in Symphony Hall in Boston. I have heard it in recordings with chorus during their forte passages but this is the first time I have experienced it with the brass.
I have absolutely NO complaints regarding the string sound contrary to one of the reviewers. This is a magnificent recording! I probably have never previously enjoyed the fifth symphony so much.

I've yet to hear a more viscerally exciting account than Gergiev's concert performance from Salzburg with the VPO - extraordinary stuff and even though it's necessarily a little rough around the edges, the frisson and electricity are unmatched in my experience.
Even if it were mono, 64kbs MP3, this would never leave my (SA/RB)CD shelves.

The Gatti recording is a sloppy piece of crap... The phrases are thrown away, and the tempos are so fast, the orchestra plays like pigs...

Marvelous "review." Actually, I was alluding to Bruce's previous referrals to Gatti's Tchaikovsky as something he especially enjoyed.

Now I admit to really liking the Gatti, but the sound on the Pletnev grabs me in a way no other recording I can think of right now does. The realism adds immeasurably to the excitement in forte passages.

I'm tempted, believe me. However, the Pletnev DG recordings really make me sick. Now, those are crap (save for the Manfred).

Gatti is still the leader in this field by far although this new Pletnev sees a welcome return to form by the troubled maestro. The fifth always can be problematic, easy listening solutions are not necessarily the most authentic.
Tchaikovsky was also a troubled man.

For sound, my favourite for this piece is still the 80s Previn/RPO on Telarc. Great performance too.
