I see this disc has 4 out of 4 recommendations. I'd appreciate it if anyone had any feedback on the sound quality. Given the price of the newer SHM-SACDs, this one seems like a bargain!

Cheers!

Absolutely disturbing cover artwork, a headless quadruple amputee. Sick!

Quadruple amputee, not quadriplegic.

Good Lord.

Anyway; if it's Bernstein's **2nd** Shosty 5th, (recorded live in Tokyo), I can tell you I was very impressed with the record. It's from '80 I believe. Very early PCM which is supposed to be ground zero for horrid sound, but the orchestra was recorded at a slight distance and allowed to blend with the Hall and it's not bad at all: infinitely more easy on the ear than his earlier, more famous, pure analog recording on early Columbia. Not harsh, better dynamics and transparency.

A potently grim reminder of the horrors of war!

I remember that when this came out first on CD in the 80's, it got very poor ratings for the sound quality.

I think this is a sort of fetish release for the japanese market, because it was recorded in Japan. But who needs a 1979 PCM recording on SACD?

Here's the CD reissue, with soundclips:

The SQ is hideously poor and performance overblown. No stars out of five!

BUT it also has the only extant version on SACD of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto as a coupling. Decent reading and better but dry early digital sound.

In the absence of any other version of this great piece on SACD (shame!) probably worth getting for that alone.

There are certainly far better fifths out there, without breaking sweat.

Cheers.

The disc page should be updated then, since it doesn't mention op. 107 (with Yo-Yo Ma and Ormandy, PCM recording from the 1980's, same coupling as the CD I posted above)

Here's the info from the label:http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sonymusic.co.jp%2FMusic%2FInternational%2FArch%2FSR%2FLeonardandNewYork%2FSICC-10012%2Findex.html

Yes, strangely the op 107 is not even mentioned on the front jacket... it's almost as if they were hiding it.

Ma is not at all bad, but - needless to say - Rostropovich or Gutman are just more authentic.

But we really need a modern or classic version of this piece on SACD!
