Spot on "beardawgs" in your review.

I'm a big fan of Adams and have most of the recordings made and couldn't agree more. The sonics aren't up to this new recording of the "Symmetries", but I prefer the tension of the original with Adams conducting.

This disc inspired me to hunt down some more pieces by Sumera (on CD, ack!) but none of them lived up to this Second Symphony. But I did discover Peteris Vasks along the way and so it goes on.

Stephen,

If my memory serves me well, this was one of the first ever pure DSD discs ever made. Probably as many others we got it for Adams and in time Sumera got under our skin! Now we tend to listen more to his Second symphony and play Adams from his own recordings ;o). As Nonesuch is part of BMG and with their money saving policies, I reckon we’ll have to wait loooong time to see anything from them on hi-res (and then not on SACD), so this will have to do for now.

Thanks for the insight on Sumera, we’ll then stick to this symphony. Btw, talking about Estonians, “Baltic voices” on MH is another winner – mostly unknown composers, but what a music! Will post a detailed review soon, need to hear it few more times, but I can tell you in advance it’s another 5* recording. After initial disappointments from Harmonia Mundi (sound-wise) Baltic Voices is their best one of what I’ve heard so far.

Nonesuch is Warner.

I have this "Baltic Voices I". I was going to buy the CD until I saw the SACD was coming out. The Vasks on this is the standout piece, IMHO. Anyway, I'd be interested to read what you think.

Ooops, yes, it is! So, if we’re lucky, only DVD-A from them... unless they shift sides like Universal America. Do you know anything about their plans?

I've had this SACD for some time now too and agree that the Lepo Semura symphony is a fine piece. I also have John Adams conducting his pieces on the disc and Rattle conducting the "Chairman Dances" foxtrot, too. I'd love the Adams' "Harmonielehre" to come out on SACD, especially the excellent San Francisco/Edo de Waart recording (better than the Rattle, in my opinion) but, as Stephen has already pointed out, Nonesuch is Warner so that's probably unlikely to happen.

I also learned recently that Kristjan Järvi is Paavo's brother (i.e. another son of Neeme) and I admit I did wonder about that when I first saw the disc. It's probably old news to everyone else here!

A rather good conductor's dynasty I might add... :))

Anyone else under the impression that the sons are better than the father?
Which would be a good thing. It means evolution of the species. :D

dinko, not sure, - kristian not recorded enough yet and brother parvo is, IMO only, a tad safe and boring compared to his dad, even tho' he's generally served by better orchestras than his dad usually had access to.
