This has to be the best news for DSD/SACD for some time and fingers crossed it will not be another false dawn.

I'm afraid this will end up as an "audiophile-only" thing ...

Hope I'm wrong :)

I'm certain it will be Stereo, only, as their SACD player (unless one wants to stack two units) is stereo, only and I'm sure the price will be a king's ransom, as well.

My bet is they will be mono amps, with $30000 price tag put on them ;)

So some $X0000 esoteric DSD (?) amplifiers will bring SACD finally to the masses? Sure thing.

In order for DSD amps to become more popular their price would have to drop to $500 imho.

They will probably target recording studios, uber rich audiophiles and illuminati members ;)

Hmm... In a sense, there's nothing really new about DSD amplifiers. Early on the SACD history, Sharp came up with two models using the technology. It is easier said than done, for such products need herculean technological efforts to work properly. Sharp, Sharp-from-all-people, decided to try its hands at it but, in the end, were not very successful. I doubt if any of their offerings remained in the catalogue for more than two years. A few years later Lipinski came up with their upmarket stereo and monoblock power amplifiers based on DSD and, as far as I know, had better success. Both products are still selling and got some rave reviews on the Press.

One of the most musical pieces of audio hardware I've ever had the pleasure to listen to isn't a DSD amp, but a hybrid beast that's hybrid enough not to raise eyebrows amongst the PCM and PWM hatters out there. The French Devialet Hybrid Integrated Amplifier, which takes Quad's old idea of a "current dumper" circuit and implements it with a "perfect" Class A module + a PWM "booster". The thing works wonders and looks like the proverbial million dollars.

(OTOH, I believe the design still needs to be improved. I was listening to Mahler's 2nd... and by the fourth movement it thought that the whole thing had one crescendo too many and shut itself off. It over-heated driving Dynaudio speakers at levels that were not really absurd.)

I wonder how many Illuminati members are actually DSD lovers?

Well, we'll NEVER know......

They're just so secretive!

Chances are the new DSD amplifiers will include USB/Firewire inputs for direct DSD files streaming. I like the idea of being able to connect a computer directly to a DSD amp, without any additional devices and cables, kind of shortens the audio path.
