Debussy: Orchestral Works - Haitink is definitely worth the hefty price of admission. A wonderful performance, recording and transfer, covering a good chunk of Debussy's orchestral output.

Thanks for the recommendation. This disc made it to my Wish List but has remained there for quite a while. If a good offer comes along I'll go with your advice.

You're kidding, right? She has probably sold more records in Japan than in Australia.

Ha ha. Shows how closely I've followed her career. Obviously she's big in Japan if they're releasing her on SHM-SACD.

The album's first track, a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene", was only released as a single in Japan, and it became a big hit there, peaking at #11 on the Oricon singles chart. The album itself was also a big success in the Japanese market, reaching the #2 position on the Oricon album chart.

I'm surprised as well to find Olivia Newton-John on the roster. I thought Peter Allen would have had a bigger international following.

"The Night of Blues and Ballads" is the 'stand-out' for me; I'm not familiar with the Jarrett album.

A lot of money indeed especially if the end product turns out to be nothing special. Having been bitten very badly (on sound quality) with several of the Esoteric remasters, the act of faith required to buy even one of the Universal Music SHM's has so far eluded me.

I "splurged" for 18 SHM~SACDs and except for a couple, the sound quality does NOT disappoint. But with the rise in prices (well, not really just the weak American dollar vs. the yen) and shipping, etc. from Japan it's become something of a "bummer."

Perhaps they'll (CDjapan) repeat their Buy 4 get 1 free again come December but since they're in limited supply perhaps my wishlist will be sold out.

I'm sure in the future, they'll be commanding enormous premiums on E~bay, etc.

Meanwhile, I'll content myself with the 50% off BD Criterion release sale at Barnes and Noble this coming week.

I bought two Warner Jazz SHM-SACDs (Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans "You must believe in spring") which I found slightly inferior to the best CD reissues I had, in terms of dynamics and detail. Maybe they were transferred from a "Japan master" (i.e. an analogue copy of the master tape). People posting reviews on this site will find them great, because they indeed sound good, but no better than easily available midprice CDs.

Claude, I found the opposite. Played the Bill Evans SHM~SACD disc on my Marantz SA112s and the CD counterpart through my Meridian SooLoos......the Warner SHM~SACD WAS the clear winner, IMO. I did use the Millennium compact Disc damper with the SACD.......did make a difference.

Hope Evan's masterpiece Quintessence is re~released as an SHM~SACD...although the RBCD is NO slouch!

That's my next to buy. Just ordered Sticky Fingers. Gonna get Love Over Gold and Royal Scam together. Let us know how Love Over is!

Got my "Love over Gold" today... listened to it twice.

Very good, no faults at all: great dynamics... please turn that volume knob up, and it will bloom!

But so far I still prefer "Dire Straits", which was even more stunning (in spite of a high tape hiss level).

Anyway, recommended purchase for Dire Straits lovers!

I presume this is the Boston Symphony recording. He made at least five recordings of the work.

Correct. And the BSO recording is not Kubelik's 'best'. Much preferable, IMHO, is his May 12, 1990 live recording on Supraphon, made with the Czech Philharmonic in the wake of the Velvet Revolution, and recorded after 41 years away from home. As good as it gets.
