I'm wondering if others have had the same bad luck with the *newest* Ravel disc from Mobile Fidelity. When playing any of the multi-channel tracks (there are 4 in all) the player makes music for a second, then there are one or two seconds of silence, then some more music, then silence -- all through the entire length of the disc. The CD layer works fine.

Just to emphasize: this is the newest Mobile Fidelity disc: UDSACD 4008.
Daphnis and Chloe suites 1 and 2, Ma Mère l'Oye. Valses nobles . . . .

It's the first SACD I've bought that has to returned because it doesn't track!

My player is the Sony XA777ES.

My Sony NS755V plays it just fine in both stereo and mch. Yours is probably just a (very) defective disc...

I've only ever had one defective redbook cd, out of at least 600 discs. Yet I've had two defective SACDs out of 70.

I remember that in the beginnings of the CD era (I started buying CDs in 1984) approximately 1 out of 20 CDs I bought had a pressing defect (audible clicks). At that time the error correction of CD players wasn't as good as today, but my Philips CD100 was one of the best in this respect.

I'm sorry to report that I returned the original defective disc and brought home a replacement. The new disc has the same problems as the first one. So buyer beware!

Hmmm. Maybe we have another "MLP Rachmaninov" problem here, where a certain number of discs are defective (but not all).

My copy plays fine on the Denon 3910.

How was that MLP Rachmaninoff issue solved? Did Philips acknowledge the problem and reissue corrected discs? Do those big companies ever deal directly with customers?

I wrote an email to Mobile Fidelity explaining the problem and asked them for advice.

I tried another copy (like you did) shortly after discovering the problem. It too was faulty - so I returned it, waited a few months and tried again. The new copy is fine.

You can search for the related thread on this forum "Rachmaninov SACD dud" - I believe that someone got a response from Philips stating that there were problems with a certain production run of discs.
