The sound on this is the finest recorded sound I think I ever heard. As to the music - one has to develop an ear for this sort of thing. More and more I am. The playing, especially Elizabeth Rowe's flute is magical.

This looks interesting - thanks for pointing it out. I've been wanting to explore Foss's music a bit more - I own a performance of his "Photion" on LP with Bernstein/NYP which I like. I also think it's important to support releases like this so that we hopefully see more of them in the future.

+1 !

Here is something else which may interest you:

Rider on the Plains - Feldman, Phinney, Wyner, Gambill

Charles Fussel's work is of particular interest.

Thanks for that as well. I should have picked it up when I purchased five other Albany SACDs during Arkiv's $10/disc label sale a few weeks back. I've really enjoyed their Lloyd Symphony cycle as well as the Don Gillis and other American composer recordings - the Kurka/Helps/Thompson disc (the one with the gasoline station cover) in particular. I've had hopes that they may become the new Mercury as far as American music is concerned (the Albany Symphony even reminds me of the Eastman-Rochester), but their SACD output seems to have ground to a halt.

This is a very interesting SACD, on a number of levels. From a technical standpoint, it is quite unique. It was recorded at a particularly outstanding hall for this size ensemble; Mechanics Hall in Worcester Massachusetts.

What is very unique are the three Nueman M-50 microphones used for the front pickup. Arguably the finest omni directional microphone ever produced for orchestra work, especially strings, they were combined with two of the currently manufactured Nueman TLM-50 for the rear two microphones. There are less than a handful of M-50's left today, and many are in questionable repair. The M-50's owned by Soundmirror are without peer.

The recording was done with a minimalist five microphone placement, and any accent support microphones mixed in analog on a Studer console. I think it's a unique reference quality recording from a world class chamber orchestra.

The recording of the BSO Chamber Players is an annual event. This year they will play their final season concert in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory on May 1.

Then record that all French program later that month at Mechanics Hall. It will hopefully be available later this year.

Two words immediately spring to mind: OH BOY! What an interesting and thoughtful program - plus my recent wish on the repertoire gap thread for a hi-rez recording of the Chimney of King Renee will have been answered :-)

I really want to get this SACD. I have enjoyed the following one for many years:

COPLAND: SEXTET/PIANO QUARTET, ETC
by the same forces + Kallish
Nonesuch RBCD

http://www.amazon.com/Aaron-Copland-Sextet-Variations-Quartet/dp/B000005IYN/ref=sr_1_14?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1301778721&sr=1-14

It is probably some of the best music Copland ever composed. The performances are amazing and the sound was terrific (I did not give it a fresh listen in years, so I should do that before recommending it because of the sound per se).

Regarding "RIDER ON THE PLAINS" SACD, yes, the music is beautiful and the sound is good. I am afraid I cannot say the same about the playing. The cello sounds a bit clumsy, IMO.

Tom, any news on the availability of this disc. Is the BSO likely to be the only source?

Hi John,

I'll ask.
