Does anyone know whether it was ever actually released on SACD?

I'm waiting for a used copy that I found on amazon.com, but the listing wasn't very clear if it is indeed an SACD copy! If it isn't, I paid way too much for an ordinary cd copy, but that is the risk of purchasing on-line. I never set eyes on a copy, my local Tower has someone knowledgable that does their ordering, and often surprises me with european or unusual recordings on sacd, but I never found a copy there. At any rate, if this disc shows up and is the mythical disc, I'll let you know, to confirm it actually did get released. I troll the sony website and find they list recordings occasionally for sacd release, and have never found that they actually did come through. What a great company, I hear they are now charging for the loaning of mastering equipment, effectively killing their own format, which they have botched the first years of anyways.

Yeah, SACD certainly hasn't been pushed very hard by Sony. Having DVD-A and now DualDisc to confuse the issue hasn't helped. Also, 'hi-fi' and the search for better and better sound reproduction just isn't the status symbol that it was 25-30 years ago, nor does it seem that there is the once legendary drive at the sound engineering level to put on tape the best recordings possible. I was hoping a few more of my favorites would make it to SACD before the masters and multi-tracks deteriorate much further. Any one know what happened to the Steely Dan SACD reissues that were rumored at one point? It's great that the Gabriel-era Genesis catalog is being transferred to SACD, it's just worrisome when changes in release dates are introduced...

Let me know if it really is Rocks on SACD. I love that album.

I'm an unrepentent audiophile, even sold the stuff for years before I went into the video business. I find items I think are especially good, but no one seems to be buying them, at least in "brick and mortar" stores that I occasion-
ally visit. I do see lots of used stuff listed on-line, so someone is buying, which leads to my point, there is a market for high-res discs, but the labels and manufacturers have completely confused me with their actions lately! The "mythical" Rocks disc showed up from Amazon, and of course, it was the first cd issue from way back in the eighties! Sounded better than that 20bit crap from the early nineties, but I sent it back for a refund, only to find some idiot in their used center scanned it back in as an SACD, and others also,
bringing their total of "Rocks" sacd's to four! I give up on this one, and will probably buy the japanese lp sleeve issue, those can be very good. Let me know if you have any success! Home theater may have effectively killed off two channel high-end and the pride of ownership, but I must confess I love my high-def plasma! Oh well, I use headphones more and more to spare my family my
questionable taste in music...

Thanks for letting me know, bummer. Yeah, it looks like one of the mythical Sony SACD pre-announced releases that just never came to be. Too bad. That album would have really benefited from a good DSD remastering.

Do you have their greatest hits on SACD? How does Back In The Saddle sound?

Cheers...

I haven't bought the "greatist hits" sacd out of idealism, as it doesn't have "Train Kept'a Rollin" on it, but does devote way too much space to latter day stuff. I may be overlooking a good package, so if I do get it, a review will follow. The best sounding sacd's that I've bought have been from recent analog masters, proving the format can be awesome when done correctly. Even my Ipod-toting daughters can admit high-res sounds better than compressed files
but they prefer portability and awful headphone sound to good reproduction! We're lost...

Have you investigated the Headroom products? I recommend www.headphone.com for some great headphone amps, and good recommendations on the 'phones themselves.

Posted on stevehoffman.tv today....

>>>>i have Rocks on single-layer stereo SACD (Columbia CS 57363), issued in a cardboard slip. it's in my mittens right now, and the back reads 'Remastered for SACD by Dave Donnelly at DNA Mastering. Authored for SACD by Stephen Saper.' it's a proper U.S. pressing, but it was a promo as there is a hole punch in the upper left of the slip and case.

Yeah, I'm still in shock.... someone around here must be able to find out the story behind this 'almost' release. My theory is that Rocks was scheduled to come out just as Sony was transitioning from single layer SACD's, and no one ever got around to re-releasing it as a hybrid.

You're right....I remember reading on musictap.net that this title was to be scheduled for release during X'mas 2004. But I think Sony had switched to hybrids by then since it already released several hybrid SACDs by that time.
