Oh, dear! I do seem to have touched a sore spot, Jonalogic, which I note you simply could not help yourself picking as you continued to edit and add to your irascible post. I watched you doing it. And I certainly wouldn't want to grace your SHOUTY CAPITAL LETTERS, sarcasms and sweeping generalisations with any further rehearsal of that tired anti-LSO/Barbican debate - I shall simply have to join Geohominid (see his glowing Davis/Enigma review) and other recommendees (presumably all of us cloth-eared) in the Naughty Corner.

You're welcome.

Disbeliever RR's Britten's Orchestra is a superb SACD in hi-res 2 channel stereo perhaps the multichannel program sounds different? Though it did win a Grammy for the multichannel. Quiet sections mean it has wide dynamic range, turn up the volume and don't play too late at night. I loved the performances, here is my review http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue50/reference_recordings.htm

Jonalogic you are so correct "LSO Live" is on my growing list of labels to avoid. Even though they are DSD recorded they are sonically poorer than even Membrans and Naxos SACDs. Very painful to endure, the main culprit is the Barbican hall.

Ditto for the Lyrita catalogue...

I too would love the Lyrita catalog on SACD, especially Malcolm Arnold conducting his own works!

And you would have all the Holst you could wish for as well! I count seven Lyrita Holst LPs in my library.

Personally I consider posting of links to your reviews elsewhere that you're not prepared to contribute here exceedingly poor form.

Sorry Zeus I cannot double post my reviews as PFO owns the copyright, however I do offer short reviews here that PFO does not get.

Coo, 7? I'm impressed.

I have SRCS 34, 44, 56, 120 and 128. There are also Holst bits on compilations or lollipops SRCS 37, 50 and 71. Do you concur?

Wonderful, one and all, with Imogen Holst conducting some as well.

Just musing, I wonder if a company like Chandos with an ongoing commitment to British music might be interested in this wondrous and irreplacable back catalogue...

Cheers

Jon

RR Brittens Orchestra performance almost sent me to sleep it is slower than Brittens 1960 performance which is exciting although the strings in certain passages are slightly harsh. The RR disc both conductor & orchestra IMO are not very good almost amateurish in certain parts , standard for a grammy ? I only listen in MCH. No tour-de-force as you claim listen to Brittens performance. N.B I have only listened to the first 17. secs, is the rest any better ?

I concur. Lyrita is the one LP label for which I own the entire catalogue. Approximately 10 years ago I became curious and determined that I owned all but 12 titles and decided to become a "collector" and fill in the remaining titles just for fun - admittedly, I still haven't listened to a few of them, including several volumes of John Ireland Songs. It sometimes takes me forever to muster up the will to clean LPs :-) Richard Itter is still around as far as I know, but seems to have no interest in re-releasing the catalogue in anything but CD (i.e., no SACD or LP reissues); however, perhaps Chandos CAN make him an offer he can't refuse.
