Hot on the heels of the Grammy Award winning Michael Stern's Britten MCH RR SACD, May will see the release of Michael Stern/Kansas City Symphony Orchestra SACD release of Elgar's "Enigma Variations" and Vaughan Williams' "The Wasps."

I hope this has a more conventional surround mix.

Yep, we all know this will sound good.

But I hope the performances have a bit more 'get up and go' than his previous Britten disc. IMO these were rather undercharacterised, to put it gently.

We definitely need a good Enigma, so let's hope this hits the spot!

Just received Britten's Orchestra Britten's The Young Persons Guide to the Ochestra quiet parts seem to be too quiet ,will have to listen to the rest of disc soon.

There is already a superb Enigma conducted by Sir Colin Davis on LSO Live (LSO 0609). I heard Sir Colin give this piece on two occasions - in January 2007
(recorded) and December 2007. He is one of our greatest Elgarians, as anyone who has heard his live performances and recorded set of the 3 symphonies will already know, and his Enigma is both an astonishingly energetic yet profoundly moving experience. This is also a very fine recording.

OK, as soon as I wrote this, I just KNEW someone would bring up the Colin Davis. Yes, it's a very fine performance for most of the time, although the final variation does not quite reach orbital velocity for me (and who nicked the organ?) A pity.

Anyway, so far, so good.

I agree the recording is 'very fine', if 'very fine' now means dry, airless, stage-less, up-front and timbrally distorted.

In other words it rather stinks sonically, like all the LSO Live/Barbican recordings I have heard. Sorry, that may sound a tad all-embracing and negative, but I have to call the shots as I hear them. And I've heard more than enough of these LSO Live efforts by now.

Other strands go into this in more detail, and whether this LSO Live 'house sound' is due to the well-recognised crummy acoustics of the Barbican*, Classic Sound's overall approach to miking in this hall, or a bit of both. I'm not going to re-hash these arguments, except to note that these sonic issues sure are trashing a lot of otherwise fine recordings.

THAT's why we need a good all-round Enigma, with sound quality that doesn't drive folk out of the room. And, needless to say, the less said about the Jarvi and Menuhin versions, the better...

This great music needs to be better served on SACD.

* the only hall that makes music sound like CDs....

Er, maybe they liked the bass and didn't bother to listen to the rest, or the performances...?

This kinda begs the question as to when/if anyone will ever get round to the classic LSO and ECO/Britten readings of War Requiem, Bridge Variations, YPG, Piano and Violin Concerti etc on Decca.

The LSO/Previns on EMI are also splendiferous.

Regretfully, I suspect never. Bummer.

Ditto for the Lyrita catalogue - the very reason one should also maintain a competent turntable in their system :-)

Indeed, totally agree!

Coo - the Malcolm Arnold, in a very early pressing, astounding... plus many more stunners.

Unfortunately, off-the-beaten-track British repertoire like this probably has as much chance of getting onto SACD as my being elected Pope.

So, regretfully, we must add these to the list of much great music and many great recordings that are never going to make it onto SACD. So, my Goldmund is safe...

I do wish it wasn't so much of a pain in the butt to keep high-end vinyl-spinners fed, watered, pampered and preened, though.

Maybe I'm just lazy.

Cheers
