The recordings have been engineered by Mikael Bergek, the same balance engineer who has done many of Järvi's discs for BIS.
So chances are we're in for some pretty good sound from DGG for a change.

Bergek also engineered the Rimsky-Korsakov works with the thin strings and cavernous lack of trebble (not much reverb, just a gloomy absence of upper frequencies; an overall muddiness with missing clarity). So you never know with DGG productions. Although admittedly, that was in 1987/1988 so times have changed.

Since several of us seem to find DGG sound unsatisfactory often, altough different engineers are at work on the recordings, i wonder whether there is some kind of label-policy to the recording approach.

The DGG Jarvi set of Grieg recordings 1986-1993 engineered by Bergek were also disappointing in comparison with those he made for BIS, and his DGG Shostakovich 12 was even worse. Your description of the engineering is spot on.

I'll be eagerly waiting for reviews on this one though i do fear it being flat and overmiked. There again it can't be any worse than the DG Karajan Sibelius Box set I have on vinyl...

I can name quite a few that were as bad or worse than the Sibelius Dgg Vinyl..Start by Most of them and Pick out the Mendlessohn boxed symphonies....I have over vinyl 4000 items and only about 3 Karajan DGG items deep amongst the misc section....oops ones is an Emi..Meanwhile .Also I am looking forward to the Sibelius sacd set.(pleased with two DGG Piano discs.).....Though Decca have quite a couple of Sibelius cycles which would have done me..Ashkenazy Maazel etc etc Dave

I have a few DG records, most of them seem to be in bad condition as they are on really flimsy vinyl. I also dislike the Karajan set because he is (IMHO) not a good conductor of Sibelius...

I have Symphonies 1 and 2 on SQ Quadraphonic Vinyl conducted by Paavo Berglund (with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra). I love those performances and I haven't found an EMI SQ vinyl that I don't like the sound of yet.

Well, Sibelius did say of Karajan that 'He is the only conductor who knows what I meant.'

I don't like his EMI Second but the DG 4-7 set is superb IMHO.

I have heard Karajan with the same repertoire live and on DG CD. The loss is incredible, there is nothing whatsoever left from the sound, Karajan got from an orchestra. I can well imagine that he is often underrated when judged only by his recordings.
