I have an Esoteric DV60 universal player which I am very pleased with. I'd certainly question spending much over £5k on a player, unless you're not restricted, bearing in mind the player is only part of the system. The marginal benefit would be minimal, and negligible compared to spending £5-£10k on room correction.

One of the sidetrack thoughts that keeps nagging away at me is "Will there be any more reference quality SACD players?" Or have we witnessed the last throw of the dice as far as silver disc spinners are concerned?

A few top price CD only machines appear from time to time but perhaps only because they've been in gestation for so long that the manufacturers have been forced to cut development and run to market in the hope of selling one or two to recoup some money before interest dies completely.

Here in the UK, Naim & Meridian have never had the bottle to go for SACD, had they done so the course of history may well have been changed as they are hugely influential companies as far as audiophiles are concerned.

You can add Chord and other less known makes I personally have never cared for any of Meridian products they sound cool( not the way stupid use is made of the term cool) or cold & uninvolving to me at ridiculously high prices. The failure of SACD is mostly down to Sony & Philips marketing plus of course magazines like Sterephile etc and the so-called High End not orignally wanting to get involved for obvious reasons.

What makes a player "Reference" or "high-end"?
Price?
Styling?
Brand?

Terms like "reference" get tossed out freely, yet there is little definition to the term, or what is represents, or if it indeed means anything at all.

The problem is that there are too many differing definitions. ;-)

Which usually comes down to the sticker price of whether one can afford to take the plunge or not...or is willing to venture out of their "ethnocentric comfort zone.....as applied to high end audio!"

Q.E.D., BCF? I hope you're not taking those petty personal attacks on your modus operandi
too seriously.....?

Just remember, a lot of us on SA~CDnet would be willing to take a bullet for you....albeit, a rubber one!

OUCH!

Village idiut say:

If we take the signal out form HDMI, all SACD players are "reference".

If we want to make a reference to our system to gain reverence, then only the most expensive unit will do.
