I was interested in purchasing a reference / high-end SACD player. Here is a list of the Sony SACD players:

http://www.audioverity.com/sony-cd-players

Sony SCD-D1 $5,000, 58 lbs, SACD, 2000
Sony SCD-D777 ES $3,500, 60 lbs, SACD, 1 bit, 2000

Sony SCD-C555ES $1,700, SACD, 5 disc, 2001

Sony DVP-S9000ES $1,500, 30 lbs, SACD, 2002

My understanding the DVP-S9000ES addressed issues found in the SCD-D1 and SC-D777ES players. Other excellent SACD players include:

Cary Audio Design CDP-1 High End CD Player
McIntosh MVP841 CD Player
Musical Fidelity A308CR 24 Bit CD Player

What do the dates refer to? I purchased my Sony DVP-S9000ES in December 2000 when it first came out. The SCD-1 was the first SACD player followed by the SCD-777ES both of which were too expensive for me, I remember waiting at least to year before I could afford SACD. So my guess would be the SCD-1 was released in early 1999.

I gladly paid $1,500 for the Sony DVP-S9000ES in 2000, now you can buy 10 used ones for that price. Beware of possible TOC reading errors with hybrids though. I do not recommend it even for that cheap.

Hi Jeff

Most of those players are years old and way-off the pace at the top level now. Old disc players can be a very risky purchase. I'd buy new or nearly new and get a warranty. Another Sony is the SCD-XA9000ES from 2004. I had one for a while and the sound was excellent, but repair can be impossible if the wrong component fails.

If you're talking TOP level SACD players, then you should consider EMM Labs XDS-1, Playback Designs MPS-5, dCS Scarlatti, Esoteric K-01, McIntosh MCD1100 and Marantz SA7 plus other players from these manufacturers.

Some of these cost upto $70,000 so make sure you choose wisely! ;)

Hey, I thought you'd have picked-out the Marantz SA7 for particular venom! ;)

Jeff I noticed in another thread you have Yamaha components, perhaps you should consider a Yamaha SACD player. They have super quiet transports without the mechanical and repair issues of Sony. I own a DVD-S1700 SACD/DVD-Audio player with the Terra Firma Lite Clock modification.

If I had the bucks I would like the CD-S2000 SACD player.

hi DSD,

i tried cd-s2000 before deciding on xa5400es.

the yamaha has no way to output mch. i have no confidence in the tray. if yamaha have sorted these two items, i would have selected it over sony.

in the end i have to import a made-in-malaysia xa5400es compared to a cd-s2000, which is available in malaysia where i live. sony malaysia does not carries xa5400es.

no regrets as the sound is more pleasing in sony, even thought they have very similiar parts.

wps

Junchoon yes the CD-S2000 is a Stereo SACD player, however all the players Jeff listed are stereo only so I thought it was appropriate. Surprised you like the XA5400ES as I like even the stock Yamaha DVD-S1700 much better than the Sony DVP-S9000ES even before it was modified. After the Yamaha was modified it zoomed way ahead sonically.

hi DSD,

u r right, he did list stereo sacd players.

just that for my case, i prefer the option to output mch. currently i have a dedicated 2ch system, but will be upgraded to 5.1 when $$$ permits.

i have heard good things about the terra firma clock mod, but i have yet to verify it, since mod players in malaysia is VERY rare.

have u heard the xa5400es?

cheers,
wps

Yes. I purchased my SCD-1 (now a back up in my system), October 1999. That was about as early that you could purchase one in the US.
