Nagraboy, the only US Distributor is Acoustic Sounds who for the last month or so has it listed as a back order. Ironically, the introductory price was $10,000 US and I did read on its website that it had to have a faulty power supply replaced and there have also been numerous upgrades, as well.

Hello rammiepie, Acoustic Sounds is not the US Distributor. They are a dealer for us in the United States. The introductory price lasted a very short time years ago. It was done instead of throwing large dollars at advertising. As far as the power supply, it certainly was not faulty. We simply found a way to make it run a slightly more efficiently. It is not even something we recommend doing since it is so minor. Any upgrades have been software which are available to all original owners for free.

I hope this clears things up!

I spoke to the designer of Playback Designs and the new CD player USB inputs for MAC are up to 192kHz, on the older MPS-5 SACD player USB is only up to 48kHz, only the AES/EBU and S/PDIF do 192kHz. So will we be seeing an update of the digital inputs for the MPS-5?

Correction:

Digital Inputs:
AES/EBU for PCM up to 24 / 192kHz
S/PDIF for PCM up to 24 / 192kHz
USB for PCM up to 24 / 384kHz
USB for DSD up to 6.1MHz

Jonathan thanks for the update, I am glad to see the new MPS-3 CD player will do PCM up to 24/384 and DSD up to 6.1MHz. Will the MPS-5 SACD player's USB input be upgraded from its current published specification of 24/48 to 24/384 and DSD?

...back in April 2006 John Atkinson on the front cover of Stereophile proclaims the dcs P8i player as Good as SACD CAN Sound...

The one statement by Adkinson (pun intended) that's not hair-raising and leave one wanting to write a letter to the editor...

He was feeding the unit directly to active monitors, I recall, as it comes with a digital volume control. That (digital volume controls work by "cutting off" bits, which means data loss when the volume is "turned down"), by the way, is one reason why many SACDs (and better-quality CDs) are recorded at low level. It allows volume controls to be left at near their maximum positions, preserving the data as intact as possible and giving maximum fidelity to the output signal. (Another reason is simply dynamics.) The P8i (too bad dCS cut it out of their product range when they stopped making studio gear and started catering to wealthy audhiophile home listeners instead) has two output levels for this very reason.

The EMM Labs XDS-1 has a digital output for multi-channel audio. You need to connect the player to EMM Labs own DAC6e SE multi-channel DAC to access MCH content from EMM's players.

Not just the newer XDS-1 either, but also the CDSA player and the much older CDSD transport.

They all have EMM Labs Optilink digital connecter for MCH SACD. But for analogue output it's just 2CH.

Jonathan, many apologies for "assuming" too much. I meant to specify that AP was a dealer and NOT a distributor......

Regarding the multichannel capabilities of the unit, what exactly does that entail and how much cost would it add to the unit? I have yet to see your wonderful unit reviewed in it's Mch configuration (MPS~5). As far as you know, are there any reviews in this configuration?

..... Off Topic vermin who pollute the forum with blu~ray and DVD~Audio and BD Audio .....

I gather tape recorders are OK, so presumably talk of wind up gramaphones and '78s would also be acceptable.

I suppose, providing the wind up Gramaphone cabinet is constructed from Good Wood.
