I'm new to SACD and I just got my first one for Christmas. I am unsure if I have things setup and I am further unsure what I should be seeing on my AVR display.

Gear:
Oppo 981HD connected to Denon AVR 1911 via HDMI. I have a 5.1 system

Questions:

For setting up my Oppo:
- should I have the "Digital output" set to Raw or PCM?
-Should HDMI Audio" be set to Auto or LPCM? If I set it to LPCM, then I can set the LPCM rate up to 192K.

For my Denon AVR:
What surround mode should I set it to?
What should be seen on the front display to indicate that I am hearing the SACD layer? Should it show Multi CH In? When I tried last night, it showed Dolby PLII Cinema.

Help. I'm a bit lost.

Congratulations.

Since you are using the HDMI output of the player, it does not matter what you set the "Digital Ouput" for as that applies only to the coax/optical digital outputs. Otherwise:
HDMI audio should be set for LPCM.
SACD should be set to default to MultiChannel (not stereo).
SACD output should be set to LPCM (not DSD).

For the Denon:
Surround mode should be Direct or Multichannel for that HDMI input.
You will not see any SACD indication on the Denon because the Oppo is sending it as LPCM. That is because the Denon cannot decode DSD (SACD) and it must be converted to LPCM in the Oppo. It should show something like MultiChannel LPCM.
If it shows, PLII Cinema, you need to change the setups.

Thanks Karl. Does setting the Denon to Multi Channel make the speakers output the same sounds, like "Hall" would?

Nope.

My AVR has Multi Channel stereo. Would this still be the correct setting? If so, then why is there such a premium placed on SACD being multi channel, when any cd can be played through all speakers at once via a parameter set in the AVR?

There is a huge difference.

MultiChannel Stereo (aka Party Mode) simply sends a duplicate stereo signal to the rear channels. All it does is make the stereo effect apparent over a large area and allows the system to play LOUDER! I would never use it for anything.

Real multichannel uses discretely recorded and reproduced surround channels to recreate a three-dimensional semblance of a real event or a studio-constructed event. The difference is huge, imho.

Google SACD and read up. The FAQ here has some info.

That's what i thought about multi-channel stereo. I setup my oppo as you suggested, but when I check my audio input status on my receiver it says PCM; 88.2 Khz; 2/0/0. Any thoughts why the oppo would be sending out stereo?

What are you playing?

Does the Oppo display tell you that you are playing the MCH track? Have you set the Oppo to default to the MCH track for SACD? Do you have the video resolution set to 720p or more?
