Thread: HDMI versus 5.1 plug connection

I have a Pioneer DV-48AV DVD player that also handles SACD. The audio can be output through an HDMI connector, but it also has 5.1 RCA plug output. My receiver will handle either input.

The manual states that HDMI will handle 5.1 SACD. However, the manual also mentions "If your AV receiver has 5.1 channel analog inputs, we recommend connecting this player to it using the multichannel analog outputs."

Is there an advantage to the 5.1 channel analog output over HDMI? Thanks!

As always in audio, "it all depends". Check ot this excelllent recap of the situation:

Personally, and unless your AVP/AVP's digital processing is subpar, I believe that HDMI is the way to go. On my system and many others I have heard, it sounds considerably better that way. But, you can always try it both ways and decide for yourself.

Happy listening.

IMO, unless your player and receiver have superior analogue capabilities, I would also recommend the HDMI route. I have multiple surround systems.....some are HDMI and two are analogue. The HDMI cable which can cost as little as $10 can carry both picture and muilti channel sound via that one cable. Some of the Oppos have superior analogue capabilities (the SE or special edition BDP~83 SE) for use where HDMI is NOT possible but a lot of Universal players (whether DVD or blu~ray) do not have worthy analog connectors so try both and see what sounds better!

Your electronics, speakers, wires, room and any other variables are unique to your system and listening experience.

Why not plug the player in both ways, switch between the inputs, and listen to the results. Then you can tell us which way sounds better to your ears for your particular setup.

One more thing to consider with the 5.1 RCA connections is bass management. I have a Pioneer DV-610V running into a Yamaha receiver using the 5.1 RCA connections, and I had to route it through my Outlaw Bass Manager. Sounds great, but there you go: one more headache. Conversely, I have a nearly identical Pioneer player (DV-600V) in my living room running into a Sony receiver via one $10 HDMI cable, and the bass management is all there, and the thing sounds amazing, probably better than the other player. Of course, the players are in different rooms, with different speakers and receivers and so on, so there's no telling what secret combination of all of the above produced the superior sound, but the simplicity of the HDMI method, and the direct bass management, is a big plus. So I'd say, Go with HDMI.
