The Firebird; I finally listened to this performance. This's a not-so-great one. Overhyped. it sounds almost cartoonish and even cute. :-( Am I missing something?

I've had this on LP, CD and SACD. I prefer it to Dorati's later recording on Decca. Before SACD, I found it to be one of the most realistic recordings in my library. I love the performance. In the ear of the beholder? I also look forward to Fischer's, but it will be the suite, not the complete I think.

There are two suites from The Firebird. The one from 1919 is about twenty minutes, the one from 1945 is about 35 minutes. This music should always be heard complete. As I understand it Fischer has chosen the short suite from 1919. Bad judgement if that is the case, I think.

The shorter suite is often coupled with Le Sacre. I guess there would be room for the longer suite. I seem to recall a post from Jared about which will be released, but I can't find it at the moment.

If the information is correct it will be a very short SACD.

My point of view is quite different, and I like it very much, and I think that it is of absolute value. Moreover, considering the present other few choices on SACD format I surely consider it an essential presence in my collection.
The full version, in my opinion is more fascinating with respect to the other two shorter versions. Globally, also considering LPs and RBCD, perhaps my preference go to the DG recording conducted by Pierre Boulez, better than his CBS-sony LP.
It is a pity if Fisher does not play the full version.

One can wish that Fischer would record the whole thing, but it is the the Rite that is the important part of the release here. Stravinsky was a facinating man. I believe he would have thought that Le Sacre would always be the more important part of a concert like this. I hear SO much Rimsky in Firebird. There can be no doubt that the Rite is totally new. But what the heck--- it isn't even recorded yet! As far as the Dorati Mercury recording is concerned, this is a landmark disk-- far superior to anything that preceeded it. It should be enjoyed for the fabulous recording it is.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. The Infernal Dance indeed packs a wallop, but there is SO much poetry, mystery and eroticism glossed-over elsewhere! Sample Dutoit or Stravinsky for starters.
