Recording producer Traugot talks about making recordings with Jarvi and the orchestra

No one seems to have told Mr. Traugott that the Schumann symphonies are recorded in multi-channel and released on SACD. Obviously, this is not important for his recording philosophy, which is mainly concerned with creating a false impression of perfection.

Great article! This is the same venue, team and orchestra that produced the Beethoven Symphony cycle on RCA, which I consider some of the best/realistic sounding MCH recordings ever released. I hope this is a long term commitment on the part of Sony Classical.

Thanks Geller! Do you have any knowledge of future projects of this orchestra and label?

I don't know what they'll do next.

But in an interview(15/09/2010), maestro Järvi said Schubert and Brahms are his priorities.
You can read it here.
http://www.resmusica.com/article_8503_entretien_chef_d_orchestre_paavo_jarvi___a_nous_deux_paris__.html

We can expect Bruckner 5 with Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in the near future. Maybe...

Hi Tom

It's a Polyhymnia DSD recording and boy do they make a damn good job of - what you would likely agree - are not the most inspiring pieces in the catalogue. The "Spring" is superbly played (second piece on this disc) and probably an automatic first choice even above Tennstedt IMHO.

I bought my copy from CD Japan, total cost including shipping to England was $33, not bad when you look at some of the silly prices being asked by Amazon re-sellers at .co.uk and .com. OK, I am a bit of a slouch at the Japanese text but you can't have everything.

Hi John

I agree, it's a great MCH recording. It was recorded, like several of the Jarvi Beethoven series at Funkhaus Berlin. That was the broadcast center of the GDR until German reunification, and has been now revitalized to a recording and event center:

http://www.nalepastrasse.de/en/contact/history

They posted four pictures of the Schumann sessions:

http://www.nalepastrasse.de/en/gallery/category/23-bremerkammerphilharmon

and posted a great 360 degree interactive panorama pic of that main studio:

While considering studio verses concert hall venues, may I recommend the Pentatone Shostakovich 8th Symphony recorded at the DZZ Studio 5. This, IMO is one of the best sounding MCH recordings available. Its sense of space and reality are without peer in my experience.

Tom
