It's been over a year since the last post in this thread, and we haven't seen the Sony's Masterwors series on SACD. Instead, Sony has prefered to launch the series on CD. Does it mean that Sony definitely withdraw from SACD? os is it rather that they will wait and see how people react before launching the SACD versions?

Cheers

Their reluctance to issue these on SACD at this time may be the result of less than enthusiastic reception of the first (stereo only) sacds they issued from the vaults of performances of the likes of George Szell and Bruno Walter. Those were not the best examples to showcase the new technology. They did very recently issue a disc of works by Greenberg (Greenberg: Symphony No. 5, Quintet for Strings - Serebrier) which I think has exceptional sound and is very very interesting musically - especially since the composer is still a kid!

Carlos, I'm glad to meet you here.

Sony Classical has recently announced a new SACD release: Scriabin's Preludes and Piano Sonatas Nos. 2 & 3, by Vesselin Stanev. It's clear that Sony Music is not supporting SACD decisively, but Sony BGM don't give up the format.

Cheers. ;-)

Is that Scriabin SACD some sort of local release? It's supposed to come out in a few days but only two german stores list it.

I doubt Sony is looking at the sales of those releases when considering if they should release more SACDs since there are much more recent releases that could predict potential sales, such as the Living Stereo releases.

Sony/BMG is out to make money, so they've probably concluded that reissues on SACD don't make as more money than CD.

Glad to see you too Leo!!!

It seems to me that the Living Stereo Series must have been much of a success, at least here in Spain. But perhaps I only see a minor corner of the market, and worldwide, and particularly in the US, the LS series has not been that success. I agree that that should have given Sony a good indicator as to the market acceptance of a Masterworks series in SACD, and the interview with the new responsible of Sony classical/BMG last year reproduced in a previous post suggested that.

In fact they did part of the job by producing new DSD masters, only to end up downconverting them to CD!!!!! It doesn't make much sense to me unless: 1.) there has been a sudden change of strategy within Sony to abandon massive SACD projects like this and confine themselves to launching a few new SACDs now and then; 2.) they are testing the market or segmenting the market or whatsoever and we will see the masterseries in SACD shortly.

I would like to believe that it is the latter option the one that explains the apparent change of views of Sony's executive in view of the interview quoted in the first post of this thread. The Masterworks series contains some of the most cherished treasures of the gramophone, like the complete Mozart's piano concertos by Murray Perahia, that I have not bought in CD precisely because I've been waiting for them in SACD :-(

3.) Sony uses DSD for archival purposes. Many of their analog tapes are being transfered to DSD, irrespective of the question if a SACD release is planned.
