5.1 may not be the optimal configuration depending on what your listening habits are. In my case, since I mainly listen to 2-channel music, I have a pair of good quality full-range speakers for that. The surround speakers are different (cheap/small), and I don't use a center speaker. No need for a subwoofer.
In any case, you should look at the used market (e.g. audiogon.com). Perfect condition speakers often sell for about 40% of list price.
I agree with the full range approach. Used is a great way to go on a budget. I am running five Boston Acoustics T930s and the results are great. The Bass is tremendous and I got them all for less than a thousand. Might be a little big for your room though.

Used gear can be a good way to go, but:
1) Speakers are more subject to abuse and damage than, say, a power amp.
2) There probably wouldn't be much point if you had to ship them (if you got them on Audiogon, for example). You'll pay maybe 85% retail at a dealer and maybe 50% privately. In this price range, that's a difference of only a couple hundred bucks. Add to that the cost of shipping five speakers and the risk of buying used, and it's just not worth it.

Agreed that shipping speakers commercially is to be avoided. But unless you live in the middle of nowhere, there are plenty of used speakers available within self-shipping range. Audiogon is the best way to find them, in my experience.

Thank you very much. I am very much under a budget. I am 15 years old and it took me a long time to save up for this. Thanks again.
I second what LC wrote, Paradigm has a global reputation for "Bang per Buck". Put your money Up-Front: get a good pair of front-speakers, and put anything old thing in back (or nothing). I am sitting facing a pair of Paradigm 11s. I have a pair of Castle Pembrookes which I am disinclined to connect, since the 2-channel is fully involving.
Subwoofers are sub dig. Beagle
