I just feel that Bernstein & his acolytes in Mahler stretch things around far too much, so that the musical line is distorted. However, I have not heard this particular recording and will keep an open mind (not so much that my brain disappears) until having done so.

I don´t know what you have been sampling Polly, but in the sixth both Bernstein and MTT take a rather brisk view. Tempi in both the first and slow movements are quite swift, no Barbirolli here! In my opinion the MTT version is preferable to both Abbado and Fischer, musically and sound wise.

My copy of the CD (not the SACD) -- which I bought from the BMG Music Club a few years ago -- has the Scherzo before the Andante. Apparently everyone else's copy has the A before the S (which I take to be the correct order in the final analysis). Weird!
My copy has liner notes by Donald Mitchell that erroneously (at least for my copy) say that Abbado chose to place the Andante before the Scherzo. And the back cover says track 2 is the Andante and track 3 the Scherzo. But they aren't!
Was this SACD released in more than one version? It's a live recording: what was the order of the movements at the actual concert?

1) Don't know.
2) It was Andante then Scherzo in the performance I attended and this was how the SACD was released.

This Mahler 6 ABBADO DG Live recording was released as a Hybrid SACD 2 disc set for the price of a single disc.. Both performance and the sound are excellent despite using only a Sony receiver .

This simply looks like a mastering/authoring error, if the track order on the disc is different from the track order shown on the cover and explained in the notes.
I think the BMG music club made it's own CD pressings.

Having heard about this, I had to buy, On Blu-ray:
Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. "do it again, turning in the best performance of Mahler's Sixth since Leonard Bernstein did it decades ago. For those familiar with Mahler's Sixth, yes, this includes two devastating hammerblows with a large wooden mallet and a resonating wooden box--finally these are hammer blows approaching the huge mallet used by Leonard Bernstein."
I screen captured one of the 2 hammer blows on my computer. The player I would guess to be about 6' tall. The huge hammer is raised fully above his head before he lets the (sturdy) wooden box below receive it with full force.. quite terrifying. Sound is DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
