OK, so there goes another Y question: why do people continue to buy them?

Beats me. I never had much interest in most non-classical repertoire and, these days, rarely buy any format other than BR and SACD.

Not necessarily, did you have a chance to look at 2009 CD sales numbers? The vast majority of artists (98%) sold less than 5000 CDs.

Yes but pop marketing lives on the hope/expectation of the income from the other 2%. There is no such hope for the classical market, so small bumps in sales derived from audiophile formats have a more significant influence on decision-making.

These polls: "Universal Music Japan" related artists only ...

So, no Röyksopp, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Madredeus,...

I would buy them in a minute ... but there's no link with Universal.

Exactly, that's my worst frustation.

No wonder the music industry is having "money issues".

I really like Röyksopp's "Senior"-album :(

Please ... Let super audio cd become mainstream one day. Better late than never.

That's curious. Why is there so much classical SACD out there (yet not enough IMHO)? Because it sells well relative to the market. Else, why would anyone do it?

Apparently, it is the lack of SACD sales success in other sorts of music that deters the issuance of more releases.

Got another analysis?

Hi Kal

Classical music has always been the driving force in music recordings (stereo LPs in 1954, CD - especially the original RBCD playing time in 1982, and multi-channeling in both SACD and DVD-A formats).
Practically all high-end classical releases are in the SACD realm because it's a niche market and the listeners of classical music usually have higher disposable incomes.

Likewise, I don't think youngsters with iPods are too interested in listening to Bizet coming through 6 (5.1) or 8 (7.1)speakers. Youngsters are just too ignorant of real music reproduction!!

I have over 700 SACDs and 300 DVD-As (out of a collection of over 23K)and am amazed at these two formats and now SHM-SACDs. This means having to purchase albums three to five times since the introduction of CDs. That's the joy of collecting music.

Examples:

Gaucho - Steely Dan (CD, MoFi, Remastered CD, SACD, DVD-A, SHM-CD and now SHM-SACD not to mention the original OMR LP from MoFi)

Ella & Louis (CD, MoFi, Verve Remaster, Verve Boxset, US single layer stereo SACD, Japan hybrid SACD (mono), SHM-CD and now SHM-CD)

Getz/Gilberto (CD, Mo-Fi, Verve Remaster, US SACD, Japan SACD , SHM-CD and now SHM-SACD).

The Getz/Gilberto should have both stereo/mono versions placed together as a SHM-SACD release because the tracks that featured Astrud Gilberto (Corcovado and Girl From Ipanema) have her vocals from the right speaker and Getz's saxophone on the left. Exagerrated stereo separation does not feel right in the 21st century....In the 1963 mono LP version, the mix is balanced. The only way to get the mono version (although in single edit form) is on the Verve Remaster.

My only complaint with the SHM-SACD releases is Universal always release the same titles over and over again , with little variety (Allman Bros, Eric Clapton, Police...). I'm sure I will buy them again....

By the way CDJapan is offering a free SHM-SACD if you buy four simultaneously...sighs here goes the Allman Bros again...

Peace

I think that it's more likely that acoustic music benefits from high quality playback more than electronically generated music (especially stuff that's distorted and compressed on purpose). It's harder to make the case to yourself/partner/... for hi-rez that reveals the electronically generated music to sound worse.
