Discussion: Mozart - Scott & Lara St. John, The Knights

Oh excellent, Scott and his little sister together on an SACD! But who are The Knights? I found their webpage by googling "Lara" and "The Knights": http://www.theknightsnyc.com/index.php/about-us

Rather interestingly, on a Shosty Cello Concerto recording, they added Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun" as a make-weight....

On the list of things that shouldn't be, a classical arrangement of Jimi's milestone piece should be near the top! Based on her dismal Bach recordings, I think I'll pass on this one.

??? What exactly did you find "dismal" about (I assume you are referring to Bach: The Six Sonatas & Partitas for Violin Solo - Lara St. John) her Bach recordings?

my only criticism is that the sound is a little on the dry side compared with the sumptuous PentaTone of Julia Fischer. Otherwise these seem original and nicely nuanced performances to me.

Yes the sound and poor phrasing kill it for me. If you like it, then that's great.

I agree, Kal. I liked Lara St. John's first Bach recording (which had several of the solo violin works, beautifully played, great sound). But this one has decent sound, an OK orchestra, and just average playing by the soloists. Listen to the slow movement of this Concerto #3 and compare it to Grumiaux or Stern, for example, and it's clear that something is missing. The lyrical line is PUSHED instead of sung. The Sinfonia Concertante performance is just plain dull. Compare with Druian/Skernick/Szell or Fischer/Nikolic/Kreizberg...
