I have a question. I am new to SACD but not the terminology and the concept. So, I bought this Sony Bluray player that also plays SACD (so it claims). I went and bought Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, A hybrid DSD SACD. Now, If I play it in my bluray player, will it play as a SACD or a CD. Wikipedia says "Hybrid: The most popular of the three types, hybrid discs include a Red Book layer compatible with most ordinary Compact Disc players, dubbed the "CD layer," and a 4.7 GB SACD layer, dubbed the "HD layer. " Please help

(1) Your choice. Most SACD players will also play CDs.
(2) Indeed, your disc contains three copies of the program material. A multichannel SACD copy, a stereo SACD copy and a stereo CD-compatible copy.
As I said, most players have options which will let you choose any version you want to hear. It is in the manual.

Just a small point about terminology. SACD (or more lately SA-CD) is the name of the package, not its component parts. There's no such thing as a "SACD layer" or "SACD copy". I know you know this, but it's helpful to use the correct terminology. There's enough misinformation about the format already.

I just looked at the Stereo/Multi-ch version of the Sony/Philips insert that used to come with SACD's (this one happens to be from the Fischer Slavonic Dances disk) and it references the 'SACD Layer' of a Hybrid SACD. I think Kal was being colloquial with 'SACD Copy' but 'SACD Layer' is a legitimate term. At least Sony and Philips thought so.

I'll take your word for it, I've thrown/given all mine away. It wouldn't be the first time that marketing, in an attempt to simplify things, has just created more confusion. Just look at the attempts to explain DSD. There's a better diagram in the FAQ (above) ... which I also note uses "SA-CD layer" (soon to be updated). And, while I'm on the subject, "multichannel layer" is also a nonsensical term.

(1) You are correct but few consumer labels or docs refer to DSD.
(2) Well, sorta. Both the MCH DSD tracks and Stereo DSD tracks are on the SACD (DSD) layer.

While I understand the etymology (Hybrids coming as a bolt-on to Single Layer SA-CD) "SA-CD" is now synonymous with Hybrids (though not all new SA-CDs are Hybrids). While "CD-compatible layer of an SA-CD" makes sense, "SA-CD layer of an SA-CD" doesn't. Anyway, this is my feeble attempt to stamp out the terminology!

I left most of mine on the Free Magazine stand at the Public Library. I would leave a few on every trip. Just one small thing I've done over the years to spread the news about SACD.
