Funny that Blu~ray audio developed by Sony is an extension of Meridian's MLP...

Well, Dolby TrueHD, the audio format used on BD that can be regarded the successor to MLP, was developed by... Dolby. And it's merely one of many audio formats BD authors can opt for. Arguably, the alternatives are also PCM-based and remarkably DSD is not specified as one of the options.

Then again, Sony is a very divided company. Note for instance how Sony's portable audio recorders all employ PCM, not DSD. For a DSD recorder you need to turn to Korg.

Supposedly, too, DSD was proposed for Blu-Ray for both the audio and video portions and one poster on this site stated that it was superior to the existing BR format. It's a shame that SONY is a divided company but likewise most motion picture soundtracks use some form of PCM for recording/mixing their soundtracks which is probably why PCM (and MLP) won out.

Ralph that DSD audio/video format was "Super DVD" and supported by Mark Levinson among others. For the audio it used DSD128 @ 5.6448 MHz, I was really hoping this format would be chosen by Sony instead of BluRay.

Unfortunately, Teresa, as you well know, usually the "best" format never makes it into the mainstream because of red tape, greed and whatever! I do love the blu~ray format and the prices are truly amazing for the quality one gets. But thank you for the clarification. You are a font of very useful info.

In the meantime Super Audio Center is developing a new ultra-high resolution recording technology and it also isn't utilizing PCM... The future of audio seems to be delta-sigma and PWM, not pcm.

Can you please shed some light on this new format.Or give us some links about this new format.I am curious.

Big corporations with thousands of employees targeting niche markets?

The goal of majors is to "produce" super stars like Lady Gaga and sell millions of mp3s (their goal is to make a profit with large volumes of product).

But if you look at all the CD releases of Lady Gaga's two (2) albums you will find many different physical media iterations:

Standadrd CD
Standadrd CD + bonus track
Standadrd CD + 2 bonus tracks
Deluxe Edition CD
Deluxe Limited Edition CD + DVD
Super Deluxe Limited Edition CD
Ultimate Fan Pack CD Edition (w/T-shirt, keychain...)

...not to mention the numerous reissues and remix issues.

How do you market "bonus tracks", "Super", "Deluxe", "Limited Edition", "Ultimate" with an mp3 release? Not!

If Super Pop artist Lady Gaga were to release SACDs like her other CD iterations the SACD format will become more popular.

I wasn't aware that 9- to 12-year old girls were such an untapped market for audiophile products.

If explicit lyrics are for 9 to 12 year old girls then we have more serious problems.

I like Lady Gaga. She's definately talented. It may not be the talent that you enjoy but she's got it and the sales of her music says much more than your opinion.

Her music would sound fabulous on SACD 5.1 surround. I am sure her audience, Pop-Disco (middle-upper class 18+ year old), is very likely immersed in the 5.1 surround sound Home Theatre market. The only "mass market" that can support SA-CD media.

Anything else is what you say, an audiophile-niche market. A market filled with aged fuddy duddies. To that end it looks like a slow death.

I guess I'm a 9-12 year old girl. I like her too. Her first album is melodic and definitely has a beat reminiscent of mid 70's to early 80's disco. And in the costume department she out Chers Cher. Rolling Stone this month has a photo of her in drag and as she is not a very attractive woman in the "classic" sense, she more than makes up for it in style and absolute outrageousness. Paris Hilton had more than her deserved 15 minutes of fame. Lady GaGa has style, talent and chutzpah!

So back on topic: IS SONY SLATED TO RE~OPEN ITS INDIANA SACD PRESSING PLANT?

Paul's correct: Lady Gaga could sell a million SACDs in 5.1 as her music would be a natural for all those millions of Universal Blu~ray players flying off the shelves.

Roll Over Beethoven, Indeed!

I think this has already been answered. That plant has never closed, SACD's aren't pressed on special lines, they use the same lines CD's and DVD's use. Terre Haute is one of the busiest pressing plants in the world, there's nothing stopping them from pressing SACD's.
