Against reason, I ended up buying a used Marantz SA-11S1. I will get the Sony later and compare them.

Not sure how you'll get a Sony, they've been out of print for 12 months.

There is a chance that Sony will make one final shipment to clear their stock. This is a speculation based on the SonyStyle page and some communication with online dealers. They also pop up on eBay and Audiogon now and then.

That's a very good price and a nice surprise for those still seeking. I sold mine on e-Bay earlier this year it may be the one that was mentioned.

Hi all.

I have a Graaf gm50 all-tube blanced integrated amp. I now own an SA8003 which is fine but unblanced player. Its also a bit on the soft or shut in side in the treble.

I am cosidering both the SA11s1 or an XA5400ES. Can anyone comment on the sonic differences?

Is it worth the effort of doing away with the single ended SA8003? I listen to both SACD and CD.

The Sony XA5400ES is excellent with both CD & SACD and with mch sacd via HDMI.. I found the Sony XA5400ES to be superior to the more expensive overweight Marantz SA-7S1 which has received reviews that IMO are inaccurate for sound quality but mechanically excellent. If you can find one buy the Sony, mine has performed faultlessly for the past two years. For short cable runs there is no difference between balanced & unbalanced modesthe Sony has balanced outlets.

I have been happy with the S1 in the past few months of use. I have not heard the 5400. If you like the SA8003 sound signature, the S1 or S2 would be a nice upgrade, especially since you have a balanced amp.

I have NO way of proving this, but when I purchased my Marantz SA~112s approximately two years ago, I was told by the salesman @ Music Direct that it incorporated the improved transport of the SA-7. Music Direct now has the 112s for approximately $2400 (demo). Again, the 5400 will play m/c SACD via the HDMI output but the Marantz while a gorgeous machine will only output stereo via single ended or balanced outputs.

Yes, this is correct. Marantz themselves touted this fact when the 11S2 was introduced. I like my (unmodified) 11S2 very much!
