Here's one to look forward to.

I've enjoyed his cycle so far. I like the Czech orchestra. I thought Exton was going back to all stereo issues, but it looks like a surround logo on the front.

"HQ" (in Exton's parlance) means Stereo.

I'll likely get this one instead of the Kitajenko release, perhaps when I am in Tokyo in November. I have the Macal Tchaikovsky 1st. Despite a somewhat resonant recording, I prefer Macal's energy to what I think is the alternative to Kitajenko's turgidity.

You may all relax, this is a superb recording and a far better interpretation than perhaps is the norm for Macal, Admittedly the first movement can appear a little ponderous and uncertain in places, on the other hand I've not heard a good one yet but thereafter Macal picks up the pace and the mood and delivers a performance overall that leaves little wanting and is at least a match for the acclaimed versions of Litton and Jaarvi.

"Manfred" is problematic for performers and listeners alike so perfection should not be an unrealistic expectation. At £35 it is not a bargain but if you want a SACD version there isn't much else to choose from and nothing better.

In other words: It is realistic to expect perfection because the work is problematic for performers and listeners alike. Doesn't make sense to me.

I didn't know there was a version of Jarvi doing Manfred let alone an acclaimed version of Jarvi doing Manfred. Am I missing something? Or do you mean Janson's Manfred?

And I would never put Litton's version above a lot of others out there. There has to be a better standard to compare this to.

Lack of a great Manfred made me break down and try the Petrenko on RBCD. It's interesting! Such a shame Naxos gave up on SACD!

The best Manfred interpretation I have heard on recordings is the ancient version from the USSR Symphony with Yevgeny Svetlanov. Highly recommended!

I think hiredfox meant that:
'It is unrealistic to expect perfection because the work is problematic for listeners alike'
or
"Manfred" is problematic for performers and listeners alike so perfection should not be a realistic expectation.

If neither of the above is correct then I join you in thinking it makes no sense.
