All the SACD-SHM titles from the first tranche (apart from Who's Next which has been held over until August 25) are now shipping or showing as in stock. For those who bought theirs from linked vendors and using the links provided, your support of this site is appreciated.

That tends to suggest that they can charge what they like and the discs will still sell.

Sigh ...

Yes,

The prices are a bummer, - but not out of line with the rest of the SACD industry when you consider that regular SACDs from like Mobile Fidelity are $30 when they're first released, and rarely are enough manufactured to meet the domain. If you add another $12 for the SHM part of the equation: then that pricing structure falls in line with the others. (Of course, some people may not think that the SHM part of things is worth it: but that's another matter).

No arguing, but I am curious to hear the technical reasons behind this. Please...

I won't try hard to explain (I'm no teacher!), but if you look at mixers that are designed for 24 bit output, they typically employ 56 bit busses internally. This is for those extra bits that get generated when channels are added and processing (hopefully minimal)is carried out.
So if you add lots of 16 bit tracks you will indeed get a higher resolution master at the end.

Or to look at it backwards - a mix, whether on vinyl, CD, SACD or anything else makes individual instruments less clear than if you heard them on their own. You can't deny that - however much money you spend on equipment. This is not least because as you add instruments you have to lower the volume otherwise it would just keep getting louder.

So in a complex mix 16 bit individual tracks may well be enough.

In following the tech issues on the new SHM-SACD - Question - are the issues just reprints of the earlier Universal SACD issued in Japan at the start of the SACD age? I have some of the earlier ones -- is there any reason to purchase?

Probably not, Dennis, unless you believe in the SHM side of things. (No comment.) - To me, this is an opportunity for some folks to get some formerly out of print titles that weren't available before. (Except for some of the new releases, of course).

I can verify that these came from the same AIT tapes as the earlier releases.

Thanks,

These $50 discs are way too expensive to test to see if the SHM process, or the mastering process, or a possible phase shift during the master occurred. I can say that on my system, the Aja SHM SACD is much more closed in, and falsely smoothed out, - with a smaller, less defined soundstage. I much prefer the redbook SHM version, - even though hi-rez makes the individual instruments sound a bit more "true."

I would really love to compare my old Getz Gilberto SACD, (which I think is quite good), to the new GG SHM SACD. But, I will never pay to do that: especially given the very poor implementation of the Aja SACD. IMO, the Aja SACD comes up as one of the worst sounding SACDs that I own, rivaling the horrible Pixies recordings.

IMO, for the money, these SHM SACDs are not worth it. Thank goodness not that many people agree with me, - it'll make it easier to unload them when they go OOP in the next couple of weeks.

Michi,

Was this Universal SACD~SHM project supervised by Super Audio Center (did you help them to select the best analog tapes and the most transparent DSD converters for the new DSD transfers) or was it managed entirely by Universal Japan?

That's what Audyssey sounds like.

£200 sucked out of my account for:
Dire Straits
10CC
Aja
Who's Next
Paranoid (is this another cruel tease or will it happen?)
& Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy (while I'm at it).

I dread the third release!
