Discussion: Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 - Thielemann

This could be a good companion to Luisi's B9 - I did like Thielemann's DG B5.

Note that JPC's site seems to say this was recorded in the Vienna Musikverein, not in either Dresden venue.

On the jpc site, the magnified cover view reveals the following information: "Live Recording Semperoper Dresden, September 2009".

In fact the german text on the JPC product page is not really about this recording. It's a press release following two Staatskapelle Dresden/Thielemann concerts in May 2010 in Vienna, where Beethoven & R.Strauss were performed. The text also mentions that Thielemann autographed his new SACD release of the Bruckner 8th at that occasion and that the disc will be in stores soon.

Thanks for the correction. Pity it wasn't the Lukaskirche though...

Can anyone compare it to Simone Young's version on Oehms? (From both a sonic and performance perspective.)

Having not heard the Young recording of the 8th, I cannot speak to the sound; however, the Oehms is Bruckner's First Version of Symphony 8, while Thielemann's performance and recording is Bruckner's Second Version in the hybrid edition by Robert Haas. The Thielemann is an excellent performance and recording; one of the best, IMO.

The differences between the First and Second Versions are substantial, so we really have to consider them and their recordings as separate issues.

I do know Young's recording of the Bruckner 2nd Symphony -- same concert hall, same orchestra in a live recording (like the 8th). And her 2nd is superb.
