There are so many fine versions of this... I love the Horenstein, the Gergiev, and it's the only Sinopoli Mahler that is worth keeping. But I am knocked out by this. Zinman's M3 and M8 are amongst my favorites these days. Very good! I didn't expect to like this so much... If you love the bottom notes from the organ you will love this!

I almost didn't buy this entry in Zinman's traversal because a couple of his other interpretations seemed a little passive (guess I've been ruined by Bernstein). But since I had the first seven, I decided to go for completeness. I think that Zinman's 8th is recorded even better than Thomas. The performance itself makes more sense to me than any other I have (Solti, Bernstein, Thomas, Sinopoli, Gielen, Davis, and others I can't think of right now). Part one is quite exciting, and part two is beautifully reflective.

Sometimes the best results come from low expectations.

Couldn't agree more with just about everything you said--- I probably still wouldn't have bought this one, but his number 3 has become my favorite Mahler 3--- So I decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did. I really like Gergiev's 8, and now this one! They are at the top of my 9 M8's. By the way, I had high expectations for Nagano's--and was not overwhelmed. Anyone know why the Nagano has disappeared from the face of the earth? Judging from the prices, maybe I should sell mine!

Could you say who the recording company is for this?

Thanks,
Tom

I received my copy earlier this week and had a chance to listen yesterday, and I too prefer it to the SFSO/Thomas. So far it leads the field of SACD Mahler 8ths, and I'm looking forward to Zinman's 9th.

THIS, the Zinman is RCA, distributed by Sony.

Click on the link under the CD cover above for more information. Zinman's Mahlers have all come out in order--with only No. 9 remaining. Most are reasonably priced. All are well recorded. Performances range from good to very fine-- depending on one's tastes of course.

Thanks, but what I'm looking for is the recording production company. Inside the booklet, there will be the production credits. If you would, could you please tell me the recording engineer's name, and if it's listed, the production company. It'll be something like Classic Sound ltd, or Tritonus etc.

Thanks,
Tom

Thanks Bill. I purchased this several days ago, and was looking forward to hearing it. After you kindly dug out the production info, I got off my duff and found my Zinman Mahler 1 and 2. They were recorded by the same team, and are quad. I guess that's more honest then fabircating a phantom center channel and selling it as 5.0 MC, like so many recording companies do. But it is not what I'm interested in having.

I find Sony/RCA SACDs very variable sonically, which makes sense given the different independent production companies they use. Having said that, they used Polyhymnia on the Jarvi Beethoven series, which I think are among the finest sounding SACD's ever produced.

Thanks again Bill,
Tom
