Guys, why such pessimism in this forum? Sure, SACD maybe/is dying out, but why wallow in misery? You all should be happy there are some new releases coming out!

I came into the SACD/DVD-A game late. Sux that I have to spend crazy money to get all the great titles from the past, but I'm super hyped I can get some new releases of groups I really like (even if some are reissues) =)

What sound differences, if any, might we expect from the reissued SACDs (i.e., all those excepting "Who's Next," "AJA," and "VU and Nico")?

Probably none, unless your player is susceptible to disc-based jitter.

I have some RB SHM~CDs and I did not find a great difference between that and a regular CD (supplied with the SHM samplers) but in conjunction with the single~layered disc and the fact that they come from the original analogue masters, IMO, should make a audible difference.Since the Japanese companies are very competitive, I think SONY will start to re~issue OOP titles and some new releases in the format they birthed.

Japan Sony never stopped releasing SACDs in its domestic market. However, I think Sony will want to see how these Japan Universal Music SHM-SACDs do in the marketplace, then decide whether it will jump back into the pop/rock SACD segment of the market.

Happy that the new discs are coming out: if they are.

Really really sad that the format that is so excellent, has failed so miserably. It's really, really, depressing to taste something really great, yet to only possess it for a brief instant. To know great love, for only one night.

It is bittersweet. In the same sense that it is wonderful, it is at the same time, incredibly disappointing.

The Brian Eno SACD catalog fiasco, loom most notably too.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts.

rammiepie--I was referring not to the sonic differences b/w SACD and RDBK--I'm not THAT "novice" :)--but to the sonic differences between these Universal rereleases and the albums' earlier incarnations.

Stephen,

Don't you think that new analogue->DSD masters would at least make "some" difference?

Cheers

REPLY TO SORDIDMAN: With the new McIntosh Blu~Ray Universal Player being released, I think that SACD is omnipresent on the
minds of hardware manufacturers so I think that SACD and to a smaller extent DVD-A are still alive and kicking. Vinyl was though to be a dead format and look how it has enjoyed a renaissance. And with higher echelon players such as the DCS Scarlatti and Puccini and the Playback Design Unit, SACD is finally beginning to be taken seriously by audiophiles who eschewed digital playback for analog. The music business, in general, is going through a cataclysmic change and the fact that a major studio like Universal Japan is not only somewhat re~entering the market but have also introduced their proprietary SHM to the format is a generally positive sign. If one is expecting instant gratification from the SACD format, we will have to wait our turn until the rest of the world finally catches up with us as the I~POD revolution devolves into the true mediocrity it really is. If young people are buying vinyl because it sounds better than CD, those same people will eventually clamor for a versatile and great sounding format like SACD because they will realize that it is more convenient and more archival than spinning records which die a little every time you play them.

In the case of Sony a combination with Blu-spec CD would be more obvious than SHM-CD, so a Blu-spec SACD if you like. Of course, if they made it a Blu-spec SHM-SACD, all for the better :-)
