As a corollary to the "how many SACD's" thread, let's pony up our investments in our music systems. Looking for total cost based on manufacturer's retail price for your components. In addition to the main components, include cables/interconnects/power cords/power conditioners/room treatments and make sure to mention if its mutlichannel or stereo. Is it music-only or does it share duties in a home theater?

OK, I'll start: my system is music-only (have a separate home theater) in a dedicated music room that is untreated acoustically. I use a cheap modern AVR to generate Prologic rear channels feeding two inexpensive surround speakers so it's faux-multichannel. Prior to inserting the AVR, I'd used a "Hafler-type" (i.e. L minus R) approach to generate rear surround sound since ~1978 and would never go back to conventional stereo. Maybe someday I'll go to "pure" multichannel but I enjoy what I have so much as it is, I rather doubt it.

Total investment cost: $29,000 (component list can be seen by clicking my moniker)

Getting ready to swap out my hybrid monoblocks that I've enjoyed for a year to go back to all tubes (a pair of Manley Snappers heading my way). There is just something special about tubes that solid state just doesn't possess.

How about you?

The cost for hi-fi components varies considerably between different countries, so this is not likely to be any proper indication at all. In the USA, as I see it, hi-fi costs a lot less than in the EU and the EU costs a lot, lot less than in Australia. I don't know about Asia, but I would have thought those countries in Asia with no VAT, such as Hong Kong, would be cheaper than even the USA.

My Levinson and Martin-Logan system cost about $20,000. I sold it to get something more streamlined (at my new wife's insistence...) and that would also function as a home theater system. I now have a Sony 5400ES, 6400ES, B&W 804 speakers, Energy surrounds (I plan to replace them with B&Ws someday!), and a Martin-Logan sub. This system cost about $9,000. It doesn't have quite the startling clarity and "slam" of the previous system, but I love the multi-channel sound, and consolidating a separate audio and theater system into one is definitely more convenient and space-saving.

I now have about $7K in components. I went from a $17K tube-based amp/pre system with Harbeth 40's to my present solid state setup with some mid-level PSB speakers.

About 16 k$US in playback and 30 k$US in recording/editing gear.

Dedicated 20 sqrM listening room/edit studio which cost about $5000 to construct. Acoustic treatment with about $3000 worth of camping gear (down sleeping bags, jackets, tents, backpacks...).
