Hello all
I'm going to Hong Kong on Sunday. I've never been before, but just wondering if anybody has any recommendations for good music shops where I might be able to pick up some SACDs? Also going to Singapore next week. Anything there?

Thanks in advance!

I'll be in Beijing and Shanghai in 3 weeks. Anything there?

For Singapore you can go to the shopping mall 313@Somerset on orchard road, HMV is on 4th floor.

For Hong Kong, you can refer to this post
http://pianofortephilia.blogspot.com/2010/03/cd-retail-therapy-in-hong-kong.html

Beijing and Shanghai, you can almost forget about finding records. Most would get their classical CD/SACD online.

When I lived in Singapore five yeas ago, my favourite record shops besides HMV were Gramophone (mind the spelling with one m), with branches at the Capitol Centre (near the Stamford hotel) and in the Specialists' Shopping Centre on Orchard Road, near HMV. The latter has been torn down in 2008 but I noticed they've opened more branches. See http://www.gramophone.com.sg/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34&Itemid=32

Another chain that had a decent selection of SACDs was That CD Shop. Their most central location was their outlet on Scotts Road, very near to the junction with Orchard Road, on the side of the Shaw centre. I'm not sure if that branch is still there but others around the city are.

I've been to Hong Kong only once but I expect you'd be most likely to succeed in the Mong Kok area -- the electronics shopping district (pictured above); the Akahibara of Hong Kong, if you like.

I'm currently living in Singapore.
Gramophone has lesser and lesser classical collection over the years. I can't even remember when was the last time I purchased a classical record there.
That CD shop was never on my list. The classical collection is miserable. CD/SACD price much higher than HMV, Gramophone.

For classical, if you can only afford to visit one shop in Singapore, that should be HMV@313. Otherwise you can go to Gramophone@the Cathay or capitol

Hi, Taylor. You're from Philips? Pity, no more SACD player, recording from Philips label...
I owned two Philips CD players, sold both to fund current SACD player..

I wasn't much into classical then and it's still a minority in my music collection, through growing.

I was then but alas no more.

For years I used SACD1000 as my SACD player but it's badly in need of replacement. Pity, it had a great sound.

Note that the Philips label since many many years is not owned by Philips Electronics -- it was sold along with the rest of PolyGram to what is now Univeral Music.
Well ok, except that Philips Electronics has issued a handful of SACDs by itself, as test/demo discs and for bundling with the early SACD players but you'll find both labels listed here separately under /labels/P

Welcome to Hong Kong, you just have to shop around Mongkok and Central, you can source 95% of SACD able to get in Hong Kong.

HMV, Hong Kong Records and CD Warehouse are largest Music Chain Store in Hong Kong, nothing really special, but CD Warehouse in Mongkok, Langham Place worth a visit.

Beat Records/Win Win Shop: Mainly selling Audiophile SACD, at Beat Records, you can get some SACD as low as HKD $20 (USD 2.5) for one SACD in their clearance counter.

Shun Cheong and Sunrise are agents of audiophile (MFSL, Analogue Productions, Pentatone, Exton, Chandos..etc..) and small records labels, worth to visit, especially Shun Cheong , , Beat Records and Win Win are quite close together within 5 mins of walk. Both of them not open in Sunday and Holidays, while next Mon and Tue also Public Holidays in Hong Kong.

Clazz also have some rare and interesting collection of recording, friendly shop owner and good recommendation.

If you go to Sino Centre, at basement and 10/F of the building, you can find 2nd hand CD store.

For Central, Disc Plus carries largest in-print SACD collection in Hong Kong I believed, reasonable priced but not lowest, knowledgeable store owner. Percival and ProSound worth to visit (Percival close on Sunday)
