Pardon my ignorance, I bought the Carpenters SACD and thought it represented the best I have ever heard from this group.

Could you enlighten me on what compression sounds like?

I think the sound is spotty on this album. As "compression must die" said, only the last track really sounds any good. The piano sounds very tinny and the vocals don't sound any fuller than on RBCD or LP. The multitrack isn't used to the best degree either. The SACD has a stronger bass and stronger drums, but I wish the soundstage had been addressed a little more. If this had been remastered with better channel separation, the recording might have sounded much more lifelike, however, what we have here is a little mushy, but yet, still a slight improvement over LP and RBCD.

I still highly recommend this disc just for the content and the small improvements that can be found on the SACD.
